Biografie

Cologne, Germany, winter 2005.
Judith is getting a trombone, a trumpet and the little Framus guitar. A lot of stuff to pack for this little girl. She is heading to Willis place around the corner where they will be starting to play music together.

He taught himself playing the guitar and wrote his first songs at the age of 16, played in various bands from rock over industrial to Scandinavian hardcore and toured the USA, Chile, Brazil, even Turkey, playing together with musicians from all over the world, gaining manifold experience. She took her first piano lesson at the age of 8 and joined the school orchestra with her trombone as a 13year old. Her talent and ambition settled her into the philharmonic orchestral rooms whilst busily practising for the diploma as a classical trombone player…

When Judith Hess and Willi Dück combined their musical idea(l)s, images and backgrounds to write songs together they called it LINGBY. Maybe that is exactly why LINGBY music sometimes is experienced as coming from out of the frying pan into the fire - there is just such a wide musical supply they benefit from.

During 4 years of playing shows, recording EP`s and working with different musicians you could nevertheless say LINGBY gradually span a red threat for the listener: both being songwriters, they sing their melodies to you in an intriguingly intense and sincere tone, surrounded by often minimalist melodies and sounds from guitar and piano, Rhodes/Wurlitzer or synthesizer, interrupted or completed by brass and string arrangements that aspire to be a small philharmonic orchestra rather than a band of five.

Since they hate boredom, LINGBY write their songs like tiny, compact operas - with each song they create a miniature world of its own that you are invited to enter and explore! But before you know it they will softly kick you out, you will have to leave and prepare for a different one…

Judith and Willi didn`t stay a duo but soon were joined by Jan Aumann in summer 2006 on drums – nowadays playing the synthesizer, effects and percussion. For three years they were on the road together and recorded four EP`s (2006-2009). Eventually David Schütte joined them along with his violoncello, his bass and his head full of ideas about arrangements and recording. The same year LINGBY also invited David Caspar to take over Jans position as a drummer.

In the beginning of 2009 LINGBY finally started to record their first album with Florian Bechte (Timid Tiger, Werle und Stankowski) which is on the verge of being published right now. It will be the result of 4 years collecting music and musicians, ideas and experimenting, trying out and dismissing.

On this record LINGBY tries to capture a diversity of snapshots from about 150 shows in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Poland, sharing stages and roads with Bill Callahan, Joshua Radin, Sometree, Loney Dear, Lampshade and many more. The songs written in stillness behind closed doors eventually grew to full bloom with the help of fellow friends and musicians taking part in arranging and recording.

But not only is this album a document of band formation - it also opens a room full of diversity, weird beauty, harmony and closeness, ready to be discovered - from infantile, humorous lightness to smooth pop melodies colliding with a sometimes confusing change of mood.

One could think LINGBY avoid the overall-smoothness and sometimes it may seem that the pop appeal of their songs is consciously unsettled by themselves. But still, the profoundness of both, music and lyrics, and an extraordinarily kind gesture is to be found everywhere - makes you lay back and feel welcome immediately!
(band bio from february 2010)
