In the year 2000 I was acting as the caretaker of my best friend’s acoustic guitar while he was traveling across the globe.
While I was in Chile, doing research for my MA thesis and staying at Discoparlante’s house, my then girlfriend lent my best friend’s acoustic guitar to a guy named Kadd Stephens (aka Joshua Buck.)
Kadd then wrote several songs with that guitar. He chose the title of George Orwell’s semi autobiographic novel about the Spanish Civil War, Homage to Catalonia, as his moniker.
At some point Kadd, myself, Katy Otto, and Sara Klemm all started practicing together for a record Homage to Catalonia was to record. We recorded the record in the year 2001, it eventually came out on Status. During these sessions the track The Business in Coffins was recorded, which came out as one side of the split 7″ with Redencion 9-11, the first release this record label ever put out.
The rag tag group of folks who played on pieces of that record did one short tour together through the south of the U.S. with Richmond, VA’s Flashbulb Memory. Amor y Lucha pressed a tour edition of the full length The Estimated Temperature of Heaven. The tour was my first, and surprisingly not my last.
Kadd, eventually bought his own guitar, and went on to play many many more shows all over the globe, and release many more records as Homage to Catalonia. My best friend however is still pissed off about all of this to this day.
Kadd later formed another band and named it after the 1982 autobiography by African American poet Audre Lorde, A New Spelling of My Name. In case you didn’t notice, Kadd likes books.
