"Mercy" is a single from the album Rockferry by Duffy. Co-written and produced by Steve Booker. The song which has received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance was made available for download from February 11, 2008 and was released physically on February 25, 2008. On February 17, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at number one solely on download sales. The retro-soul style is given further significance by the appearance of several Northern Soul dancers in the song's video. As of 25th July 2008, Mercy has been viewed on YouTube over 23 million times. Mercy is included in the FIFA 09 soundtrack. Mercy was the best selling single of 2008 in the UK with over 420,000 sales until November when it was overtaken by the hit single Hero by the X Factor Finalists putting it into second place.

According to Duffy, the song is autobiographical and is about "sexual liberty" and "not doing something somebody else wants you to do". In an interview the singer also likened singing Mercy to having sex and said she loved to sing it as she felt it was like "having sex everyday". The organ riff played throughout the song is very similar to that of "When the Music's Over" by The Doors. The introduction of Mercy is reminiscent of the opening bars of 'Stand by Me' by Ben E King. (Although the intro to Stand By me uses 1 5 and major 7, while the intro to Mercy uses 1 5 and b7, making it initially sound more "bluesey"). Mercy is written in the key of G major and the chord progression used in Mercy is the 12 bar blues so the main chords are I,IV,V – while this chord progression is common in pop/soul music, the vocal melody of the song appears to have been lifted from Aretha Franklin's hit Chain of Fools.

"Mercy" won the 2008 MOJO Award for Song of the Year. The award is voted by readers of the magazine. The magazines editor Phil Alexander called the song a "timeless" classic that " could really have come from any period in time over the last 50 years". The song was used as Duffy's debut single internationally.

The Game has remixed this song, as has Gareth Wyn. In September 2008, Duffy went to the American nightshow Saturday Night Live, in where she performed this song along with "Stepping Stone."

Duffy also performed this song at the MTV European Music Awards where 'Mercy' was nominated for 'Most Addictive Track' and Duffy being nominated for 'Best New Act'. She also performed the track along with new single, "Rain On Your Parade", on the BBC Children in Need charity appeal.

The UK music video for "Mercy" features Duffy standing on top of a platform performing. Featured in the video are Northern Soul dancers who dance to the tune. This is because Duffy wanted to pay tribute to the Northern Soul 'feel' of her song. Another video has been filmed for release in the US. It shows Duffy performing on a stage while people dance to the song. The UK version has garnered over 20 million views on Youtube and its American counterpart over a million.

“Mercy” will be used on the Xbox 360 karaoke game Lips scheduled to be released before Christmas 2008. The song also features on the soundtrack to FIFA 09.

Its peak position was number 1, on the Eurochart Hot 100, Austria Singles Top 75, Dutch Top 40, Germany Singles Top 100, Greece IFPI Singles Top 50, Ireland Singles Top 50, Norway Singles Top 20, Swiss Singles Top 100 and UK Singles Top 75.

"Mercy" has sold 477,305 copies in the UK as of August 10, 2008, making it so far the second best selling single of 2008, being beaten by Hero by the X Factor Finalists ahead of Nickelback's "Rockstar" in third and Basshunter's "Now You're Gone" in fourth.

"Mercy" also reached No.27 on the Billboard Hot 100.

'Mercy' has reached a new peak of #26 in Australia (September 8) 27 weeks after enetering the ARIA Top 100.
