"Cattleya" is the name of an American orchid variety, but it is also a metaphor used by French novelist Marcel Proust (1871 - 1922) in the center piece of of his work, "In Search of Lost Time".
"Cattleya" already gets introduced in the first chapter and becomes a symbol for the ups and mainly downs of a furious passion that never finds any satisfaction. It stands for love, affection, eroticism and secret desires between the main characters.
The German-Italian piano trio "Cattleya" was founded in 1990 and "le temps perdu" became their debut release on the Austrian label PAO in fall 2000. Now that we have got back the rights to the masters we are very happy to announce the re-release of the title. Critical acclaim in countries like Germany, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Austria and Switzerland led to further demand in the market, we hope to fulfill now.
Drummer and leader of the group Harald Ingenhag got inspired by Proust's novel to write some of his compositions on this album. The opener "Le petit Marcel va au lit" refers to a chapter in the first book: young Marcel can't go to bed without having a good-night-kiss from his beloved mother; a day by day ritual for the young hero of the novel, that gets disturbed by the arrival of Monsieur Swann one day.
"Tango Cattleya" illustrates a carriage ride over bumpy roads through Paris by night around the turn of the century. Monsieur Swann approaches Odette de Crécy wearing a low cut dress very bluntly. He offers his help to rearrange the amulet she wears around her neck in the shape of a cattleya orchid.
Besides Proust's cosmos of associations, we find dedications like "Song for Nick" for the late songwriter Nick Drake, whose "River Man" influenced this piece or adaptations like Peter Gabriel's "Mercy Street".
"Cattleya" play jazz of a different kind, very mellow and lyrical with influences from pop, folk and impressionism. Pianist Michel Bisceglia's tasteful voicings and gentle improvisations are the asset of the group. Bassist Volker Heinze proves to be the steady backbone while Ingenhag's rhythmical approach is highly sensitive.
Bisceglia's debut CD from 1998 on BMG featuring Randy Brecker und Bob Mintzer became a bestseller in Belgium and marked the beginning of his incredible career in the BeNeLux with the likes of Kris de Bruyne and Jo Lemaire. Volker Heinze - a steady member of Rainer Witzel's Venue - has worked with Gunter Hampel, Lew Soloff, Kenny Wheeler or Charlie Mariano, while Harald Ingenhag has been a member of the Thomas Kessler Group and Art de fact among others.
" Music at the edge to silence, full of passion, intensity and identity" this is how Cattleya's original sound got described in the German press.
