Astonishing career! From Elizabethan Reggae to being Lee "Scratch" Perry's in-house bassist to his second wind as a pop artist in the 1980s! Great bassist and great vocalist! 👏

On the map with American kids under the age of 25 perhaps! This guy was a well-respected reggae bass player for decades and a regular member of Lee "Scratch" Perry's in-house band The Upsetters. He then enjoyed fame as a solo artist in the UK during the 1980s, pretty sure he scored a number one single with I Want To Wake Up With You. He also had hits in the early 1970s as a solo artist.

Kendrick AND Moonlight brought me here. I find it interesting that two of the most revolutionary, genre-defining works within the span of a year sampled the same song for their openings.

How "revolutionary" can either of those artists be considering they're sampling 70s soul music? That doesn't sound revolutionary to me. Hmmm...

So, a few things: 1. Moonlight is not an artist, and as such is not sampling anything. It is a film, probably most famous for being the subject of the most notorious screwup in the history of the Academy Awards (https://youtu.be/s91tcAh_XF8), but worth watching for numerous other reasons than that. I would rank it the best dramatic film I’ve ever seen, just barely edging out Pan’s Labyrinth and Casablanca. I will disclose a bias on account of having attended school and worked on several plays with one of its producers, but it’s also got a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and pulled off an upset Best Picture victory, so make of that what you will. 2. I’m not sure that your implication that sampling prevents a work from being revolutionary holds water. Under that standard, works such as Fear of a Black Planet, Paul’s Boutique, and Endtroducing..... can’t be revolutionary, either. This standard seems unlikely to gain many adherents. 3. Nice screen name, though; Kropotkin is one of my heroes.

A shoutbox with a thousand-character limit and no line breaks is a completely inadequate medium for a meaningful discussion of art. I've literally written over 50,000 words on how revolutionary Moonlight is, but I'm not about to share it with some smug fuckhead who insults me gratuitously, without any sort of provocation, and without any actual knowledge of what I do and do not know. Fuck off.
