Underrated album, this is one of his best works! This is up there with "Blonde on Blonde", dare I say. Every track on this album is golden, I don't understand why this is a "meh" album.

I can't tell if this is good or not. I mean, it obviously is, but by Dylan's standards... idk what I'm tryina say but like I don't know if it's good average or bad I listen to it a lot and enjoy it but I feel like it might be a bit repetitive or some shit idk.

It's an amusing album as an extension of what he was exploring with JWH/Nashville Skyline (and to some extent Self Portrait, though I am much more fascinated by Self Portrait). Far from my favorite album of his, though.

other than the live version of "like a rolling stone" I actually enjoy most of "self portrait" a lot. I skipped it for seven or so years due to its reputation but one day decided to buy the record. I found it to possess a warm comforting beauty. I return to it quite often actually. Its a lil overlong but Dylan's voice has such a beautiful timbre to it throughout that I don't mind.

I love his recording of "Can't Help Falling in Love"...not on Self-Portrait (or even "Another") but done during the same period. and yeah the Isle of Wight Festival performance in general doesn't do anything for me.

This was actually one of the first Dylan albums I bought. I got a couple of budget 3-album box sets; one had Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde and the other had JWH, Nashville Skyline and New Morning. I enjoyed New Morning back then but as I got older and read more about Dylan and absorbed (much) more music from many different genres and artists, somewhere along the line I bought into the idea that this was just "minor Dylan" and was a mediocre/lightweight album. Not so. It falls into a similar position as Nashville Skyline in that it doesn't represent a Huge Important Statement the way many critics always want Dylan's best records to do and coming on the heels of the audience widely maligned (and I think wildly underrated) Self Portrait, it arrived at a time when many had given up on him (else why would Blood on the Tracks be regarded as such a "comeback" just 4.5/5 years later?), but this record gives us Dylan writing a dozen songs that are in a

similar vein to those on Nashville Skyline, but they don't quite reach full "Country" status in most cases, tending to fall just slightly on the "Country Rock" or "Folk Rock" side of the line where Country begins. Whatever genre you file them under, though, these songs are beautiful and Dylan performs them with obvious care and feeling; his singing is some of the most plainly enjoyable of his career before or since, the arrangements are full of tasteful guitar and twinkling piano and the occasional backup chorus. Someone more cynical than me might describe it as "Easy Listening Dylan," but I find its blends of Country/Country Rock, Folk Rock and even sort of a Jazz Rock/Jazz Pop sounds (particularly on the fun "If Dogs Run Free") just beautiful and consistently enjoyable. Highlights include "If Not for You" (done more famously by George Harrison), "Day of the Locusts," "Went to See the Gypsy," "Winterlude" (probably my favorite), the title song and "The Man in Me." Highly recommended.

His higher notes on this album sounds so different, principally on ''Went to See the Gypsy'' ''New Morning'' and the stuff of Another Self Portrait.. Akayz 7 glad for the information, makes a lot of sense

Your top artists are green day, nirvana and the beatles. You don't get an opinion here.

I've been ambivalent about this one for months, but I think right now I might be falling in love with it for good. I don't want to hear anything else, just this album over & over & over again...

I'm listening to the 2009 remaster and the original LP with studio grade headphones, I cant decide which I like more. They both sound great.

Overlooked album. It's a little bit scattershot, not all the songs on here seem to fit together, but it still contains some fine songwriting. "Sing on the Window" is one of my favorite Dylan songs from any period. Its gorgeous.

agree, this is vastly under-appreciated, and makes a nice addition to any sort of Dylan compilation
