The Black Cargoes tentatively took the shape of a trio after several line-up changes and a number of interesting live performances. In June 2005 the Oberholzer brothers (Toronaut and Feldermelder) and drummer Hanspeter Zürrer entered the studio to record their first album Alas (saïko records). The result was a spontaneous and diverse record, the main purpose of which was to help promote the band. For the first time the electronic soundscape of Feldermelder were fused with the compositions of his brother Toronaut. They had always shared the idea of making music together, and so they did in the shape of various projects, records and live performances preceding their collaboration as Black Cargoes. But it was only with this formation that they managed to combine their respective musical territories convincingly. „Obwohl die Texte von Black Cargoes kein gutes Haar an der Welt lassen, liefert das Trio seine Schönheit in Form von gekonnt zusammengesetzten Songs an den Hörer ab. In autumn 2006 the Black Cargoes published their first music video for the highlight of their album, Sway. Pictures of the band performing in a big hall alternate with monochrome montages of Berlin rushing by. The video was shot by Bernhard Zitz and Nicolas Veuthey. They had only a small budget to work with, yet the result is stunning and shows the music of the Black Cargoes in yet another light. The person responsible for the album artwork as well as practically all other aspects of the Black Cargoes' graphical appearance - online, on posters, t-shirts, flyers and CD’s - has always been Iwan Negro (insofern.ch).
By the end of 2006 the band was joined by bass player Mario Weiss (Tasteless). Early in 2007 Hanspeter Zürrer left the band and Grégoire Quartier (Cortez) replaced him as drummer. After a year working hard on new songs a new album entitled GLASS will be released this autumn (19.09.2008). The album was recorded at La Fonderie by Sacha Ruffieux and astonishes by its depth and originality: Toronaut’s voice at its best and an ingenious amalgamation of modern electronic music and rock. Also in autumn 2008 the band will release a video for the opener of the Glass-album: Darkened floor (TV, YouTube and MySpace).
