The Modernist (aka Jörg Burger), under a multitude of monikers including Burger Industries, Triola, Jörg Burger has established himself as one of the pioneer of minimalist techno scene (in close connection with the legendary Kompakt Records label). Fully immersed in electronic music culture, Burger founded the Cologne department of the Delirium record store (which was to subsequently mutate into Kompakt), as well as the Eat Raw label. He also published House Attack magazine.
The Kompakt Studios were built in late 2005 and since then Burger has worked alongside famous techno artist such as Reinhard and Wolfgang Voigt, Jürgen Paape, Michael Mayer, and Superpitcher. In particular, Burger's collaborations with fellow Cologne native Wolfgang Voigt (aka Mike Ink) has shaped their individual careers in a very distinctive ways. Both were inspired by the music scene in London, where Burger and Voigt resided in the early '80s. Both became acid techno converts when they returned to Germany, and by 1988, were recording electronic music influenced by both pop and acid techno, though Voigt's music had a minimal, rhythmic bent while Burger was producing a warmer and more melodic flow.
Although his technophile Modernist persona suggests a fascination with the contemporary, Burger has also expressed a love for the classic indie pop of such 80s UK illuminati as Aztec Camera, Orange Juice, Scritti Politti and The Smiths. As early as 1992, his intention was to produce acid house with the spirit of pop.
The Modernist, one of the Germany's most prominent and influential electronic music producer, composer and the figurehead of Cologne's minimalist techno scene, hits The Academy's Green Room on May the 1st with special guest Rushkeys.
