Recently I've been listening to a lot of black metal so we're at 99%, I see a lot of great stuff. Also I saw that you were asking for non-black metal recommendations, have you ever tried listening to Opeth ? The early albums in the 90s were kind of black metal, but it's prog death metal later on, the first 2 albums have a black metal sound though, and it's pretty well combined with the folk and other styles too. I'd say the first 2 Opeth albums remind me a bit of Dissection's Storm of the Light's Bane, but with way longer songs, and more complex.

I am never shocked by an artist personal life - as you said, I listen to all different artists with questionable backgrounds. All I'm saying is that I perceive some sort of hypocrisy around Emperor: everyone cares about any artist personal views, but come one, why Emperor is percevied by the public as a "safe" band? By the way you may called me a nerd too as I am a programmer for living, so no offence here. Yeah I agree with Enslaved... they're such a strange band. As for Dissection I think their personal views/story is part of the legend itself, as with Mayhem: you can't separate music from the artist there, and that's part of the mystery and beauty of it. As for black metal in general, I think the definition comes from Euronymous itself: metal music with satanic message. From that definition it's very straightforward to say if a band is black metal or not. But still... debates, arguing, definitions, different extreme views.. that's the beauty of "extreme metal" overall!

Yes, but what I meant with separate the art from the artist is that when I first checked out both Emperor and Dissection - I didn't know anything about the musician's personal lives or their ideologies, at first I listened to them because those albums were at the top of the list of ''Top 25 Extreme metal albums of all time'' Back then I only checked it because of my curiosity about extreme metal music - and of course later on I looked up all about Emperor and Dissection and even the other black metal bands and their stories and stuff like that.. Yea, I mean technically the definition is also from the sound, which was defined by Bathory and other bands in the mid 80s, but yes even with Venom coining the term black metal it was a satanic message from the beginning, I also think that if you have like colors we know that the color Black represents HATE as an emotion, so I think that also fits. That's why you need that separation in style of growls, and the riffs too, because a lot of

a lot of or the majority of Death metal bands are satanic as well, in fact that was the whole point, although death metal also focuses on gore / violence lyrics, as you said like most extreme metal music, and also sometimes yeah it is hard to say if a band is death or black metal, Sarcofago is a good example, because I can see the argument for both, although I think it's more black metal, because of the vocal style. Even with Deicide, some of their stuff sounds black metal, the first demo from 1987 is black metal sounding, and they were inspired by Exorcist (1985) early speed/black metal album that was so over the top satanic for the time, about the Salem Witch trials, Glen from Deicide cited them as their influence, it's interesting I watched all interviews with Glen I can find, and he only mentioned Exorcist as an inspiration..

You should try this: https://www.last.fm/music/Godkiller/The+Rebirth+Of+The+Middle+Ages+EP Heavily underrated, a mix of Bathory/Graveland/Bilskirnir with maybe early Satyricon as well. It's a hidden gem for me!

Well, Discharge would be an immediate choice. They invented the D-Beat genre and inspired pretty much every thrash band. For discharge check out Why? It was originally a 10 track EP but on streaming its a 22 track edition, with those extra 12 tracks being singles, some of their best work. Second would be GWAR, but only their debut, it's crazy, disgusting and fun, and my personal favorite album ever. Misfits is another obvious choice and coined the whole horror punk thing. Earth A.D. also inspired many black metal bands, and I can see you like black metal. Shitlickers is the next rec, they were my first experience with hardcore outside of the US and the Shitlickers self titled EP is some of the most raw and chaotic punk ever. RKL is next. They're hardcore punk at the base of it all but their drummer named Bomber wrote these insane basslines and all of the music is so technical. Perfect shit. For them, listen to Rock N Roll Nightmare. Other than that, just look at Hardcore playlists.

If you are looking for something outside of black metal then I have some other unique bands for you to try out: such as Boris (Experimental Metal), Acid Bath (sludge metal), G.I.S.M. (hardcore punk), Iron Lung (power violence), Domovoyd (Doom Metal), NoMeansNo (punk rock), Today Is The Day (Experimental Metal), and Hell (Doom Metal). Let me know what you think of these bands.
