Oh man, I thought I replied to your suggestion, but no I have not. I'll have to check em out. I found a beautiful Funeral Doom album by Loss which is just phenomenal and doesn't overstay its welcome.

you did reply, just on my profile instead of yours, its a handful of shouts down. I will check out Loss! lately though i've been on this kick of dark synth-y ambient, if you have any recommendations along that line.

death metal group Blood Incantation, who are always great, have an ambient album called Timewave Zero which set me on the ambient path again. The most recent Yellow Eyes is also mostly an ambient album. then i've been going through the Cryo Chamber catalogue to see what stands out, so far Apocryphos and Planet Supreme catches my attention the most. Then more "folky" ambient i've liked lately is Daemonia Nymphe, the Sabbath Project and Peter Gundry. Stuff I really liked in the past that i've been meaning to revisit is Tetsu Inoue, especially his album Organic Cloud.

Oh I listened to it when it came out a couple times and I wasn't too hot on it. For what I have heard in the genre, it just seemed a bit uninspired and just sort of thrown out there and I didn't really get drawn into it and was high enjoying some mary jane while listening to it, second time was sober and I felt the same about it. I also recently listened to Echoes Of A Celestial Ruin by Midnight Odyssey and it had some very beautiful moments, however I think I need to explore it a bit more and break it down into hours, as the whole 3 hour run did start to wear me down and I'm a guy who grew up on a healthy diet of Prog Rock, Classical and Jazz with the main course of Hard Rock and Rock n Roll, so I'm very used to loooooooooong albums and even this one was difficult for me, so I'd recommend breaking it up by hours, however I do believe it is MO' 3 ambient albums all put together, so listening to those should be better. That being said, it's not groundbreaking for the genre by any means.

only a couple of tracks into Echoes of a Celestial Ruin so far, but this is the first MO that i've liked in a long time. I loved Firmament and Funerals from the Astral Sphere but after that they got too symphonic for me. But Echoes is really restrained so far and is working well for me. I could see Timewave Zero as sounding kind of basic but i really like the sort of 80's horror synth score kind of tone. I fell in love with Blood Incantation since I saw them open for Immolation last year. Starspawn is my favorite from them.

I definitely need to listen to Yellow Eyes a little more before I can form an opinion. From how everyone described them, I guess I expected a lot more, however thats probably also clouding my judgement a bit and I need to go in fresh, the new album might be a good place to start. Oooo that label looks interesting, they should be fun to follow on BC. Speaking of Record Companies, Satanath Records has their whole 300 album discography on sale for like $40 and I gave in and got it and it's so far I've just been listening to some just good ol, solid Death, Black and Thrash. So far I've enjoyed Pure Eternal Hate by Vomitile, Conquerors of the New World by Inhuman, VII: The Chariot by Order Of The Ebon Hand and Увод... by Тишина. Oh I'm dumb, I've got a couple of just some great atmospheric/ambient Metal albums that I think you would like. I finally listened to Elysian Blaze's Blood Geometry for the first time since it's release and I knew it was good back then, but I wasn't ready, but wow!

in a sense Yellow Eyes fits in well with other New York-based BM i've heard like Krallice and Tombs where they lean more toward a bludgeoning rather than a piercing tone, however Yellow Eyes adds a unique avant-garde spin on it. Rare Field Ceiling is still my favorite but I do like the new one a lot.

Eons by Neptunian Maximalism was one of the best albums of 2020 and it's the perfect fusion of Metal and Jazz. It's Drone and Free Jazz and it just takes concepts and sounds that John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis all explored, but fused so organically with Drone Metal, it's a treat! Spectral Lore and Mare Cognitum have done 2 fantastic splits together. Beautiful Atmospheric Spacey Black Metal thats well written with a thick atmosphere and fun, it may as well be Metal's answer to Gustav Holst' Planets Suite. it's Wanderers: Astrology of the Nine. Sol (1hr is the first split they did together. Im Wald by Paysage d'Hiver is another one of the greats of 20 and it perfectly simulates Winter in such perfectly raw and harsh Black Metal and I can't wait to enjoy it in snowy mountains when I move up North a few states in a few months. I should probably mention that all of these albums are 2 hours, however they all do a great job at holding your attention and they breeze by.

I had a chance to see them on their breakup tour and my dumbass let work get in the way. When I saw them first re-release their albums on vinyl on BC I had hope and then a pre-order for a new album! I'm so excited. Are they coming by your area at all or are you outside the US. I didn't know a second single came out, will have to check it out!

I still like Krallice's self-titled the most, but Diotoma is good too. only their first three albums bore any resemblance to black metal and everything after leaned more toward completely amelodic tech death, kinda like later Gorguts. i still enjoy the later stuff when i'm in a gnarly mood but those early albums have more interesting movements and progressions. as for the SGM tour, it depends on where I'll be in March (i divide my time between two homes), but depending on where i am it's likely i could catch them either in Seattle or Kansas City

Bizarre murder cases have recently occurred in Raccoon City. There are outlandish reports of families being attacked by a group of about ten people. Victims were apparently eaten.

72's definitely a great year, and I love a lot of the Europe shows. It's hard to pick an exact favorite because how much their vibe varies throughout the eras. For that raw, heavy, uncontained feeling of their early years, the Fillmore West 69 box set is a must, and there's some great 69 shows out there that aren't in the box set such as 12/12. 72 and 73 are years you can't go wrong with, and 06/10/1973 Robert F. Kennedy stadium was the specific show that got me to love to the Dead. 77/78 are interesting, that's when the disco-vibe starts setting in. I like the new years show from 77 a lot. then most of the 80s are skippable, however there's a really good run in fall of 89 and spring of 90. It's definitely more refined Dead, but the chemistry with Brent Mydland is especially strong in those shows. August of 89 and March 90 I think being the specific parts of the run that I find especially memorable.

Then this is a very unpopular opinion but I think a lot of Dead and Co. shows from this year have been great. I think Oteil is the best bassist who's ever played with the Dead. Mayer is a more than competent lead guitarist. And the Drums & Space are more epic than they've ever been! Mickey Hart's definitely become their most vital original member. I definitely recommend checking out 7/7/23 at the Gorge in WA the most, however I think 7/15/23 in SF may have the best Terrapin Station I've ever heard.

I literally had tickets to see Dead & Co in Chicago this year on their final tour but ended up not being able to go. It's insane that I missed what would probably be my last chance to see Bobby perform (unless he does more gigs around where I live). Honestly going to regret it for the rest of my life haha

so the funny thing is I wound up traveling to cat-sit and cover shifts so my friends could chase Dead and Co. They kept stopping by between shows to share the stories, and also spoil the hell out of me to make sure I wasn't getting bitter. But I livestreamed the shows as they were going on, pretending I was there. Bobby Weir and the Wolf Bros are still performing if you want to see him. I'm hoping for some Dead and Co one offs but yeah that was their "final" tour as they've done their best to convince.

Yo! Yeah there's been some great releases this year, really love that new split from Worm and DU as well as the new Yellow Eyes! Checking out your charts and I think you'd also dig the new record from Malokarpatan. It's like blackened heavy metal with a healthy dose of prog sprinkled into their new album, super cool!

I also checked out Dream Unending. It's a fantastic Death/Doom Album! It really brought me back to listening to My Dying Bride or Draconian back in high school. Thanks for kicking my butt into gear to listen to it. Another album that has been quite interesting is Икотка (Ikotka) — Распад. It's a fantastic atmoblack album.

I think it's incredible and I applaud them for taking a more textured and experimental approach. I do miss Joey Osborne's swing-beat approach to the kit, but whoever they have drumming now is surely appropriate for the direction they're taking.

So whats a good album to start with for the Residents? I've listened to the early few, and like Captain Beefheart, cool to listen to a couple times, but not necessarily fun. As they can be quite atonal or just feel like a mushroom trip that just becomes random.

Hard to say. I started with Duck Stab then the Commercial Album, which are both considered their most accessible and catchy of their first decade, though these days if I'm in the mood for early Residents I'm more likely to to revisit Third Reich 'n' Roll or Meet the Residents. My favorite album from their later years though is Animal Lover, I'll still listen to that one a lot. Then as far as their story albums God in Three Persons is a mindblower.

I listened to Lapsed and Set & Setting a lot in high school so I kind of wore them out, though I would probably still listen to Set & Setting if I could find it, my copy's long lost and I guess Matador has held on to the rights so they can't re release it.

It's my favorite since ObZen. It's got a uniform mood and I love the melodic textures each song sort of develops into. "They Move Below" might be my favorite track on there but it's tied with "I Am That Thirst". I wasn't huge on Violent Sleep of Reason, I have trouble listening to that album all the way through, but Immutable I can listen to a couple of times in a row.

Just checked out some Woman is the Earth. The first album is pretty standard atmoblack, however the amvient parts were quite well done and they did a great job at blending them. Almost as good as Spectral Lore or Darkspace. The first EP was absolutely gorgeous though. A perfect blend of atmosphere, ambience and harsh black. The newest EP was definitely a nice step up in harsh brutality, but still kept the atmosphere. But it almost reminded me of Akasha, but with added atmosphere.

Damn, that's awesome you live in PT. Well I moved back to my original home in Missouri a few months ago, though I'll be visiting PT soon to cover some shifts at the restaurant I use to work at (I worked at the Blue Moose for a few years). I lived in PT for 9 years, so odds are we know each other. I'm Jordan. Aside from working at the Blue Moose, I'm also one of the guys that ran The Space, the music space in the business district behind the Goodwill. I played bass in The Merrymakers. and I also was staff and volunteer at The Boiler Room for a few years while it was still open.

yeah it's really sad that there aren't more all-ages shows in Port Townsend. people under 21 really miss out on the music scene there. I walked/biked everywhere when I lived in PT too, and yeah East Park Ave is a bit of a trek from the Fort. It's possible I know your parents or at least your dad. The Merrymakers played many shows and we even finally played Concerts on the Dock last year. anyway I miss PT a lot and wish I could move back. and blessings on your journey of diving into the love of music!

well, live music has been illegal in Washington state for over nine months now, so that's at a standstill. But in late 2019 I saw and discovered Geist & the Sacred Ensemble, they were an impressive local Seattle band, they opened when Insect Ark & Oranssi Pazuzu came through together. and then a few months later YOB and Earthless came through together, a local Portland band called Blackwater Holylight opened that also impressed me.

I looooove the Gryphon. I made friends there right away. Great vibe and it would be my main haunt if I lived there. I'm not gonna ever drink that Agua de Bolivia stuff again though, lol. However, I did not see a show there, so I wasn't at that gig. I went to see Alcest at The Fleece, and later Insect Ark at the Lanes. then a variety of live shows that seemed to be going on nightly in Stokes Croft where I was staying, and another more downtown area that I can't remember the name of. Definitely a warm, welcoming nightlife in that town. And food's still cheap there; I feel like it must be what Seattle was like before the tech boom.

Wow, happy to hear you're doing so well, and all of this despite the lack of internet connection. Having the opportunity and the ability to appreciate and get in-tune with nature, and to get some reading done while you're at it.. sounds pretty peaceful and ideal to me. The sort of thing that solitude enhances, I figure. I can imagine that the trees are beautiful right now, the way you describe them.. here in the Appalachians, every tree in the hills is dead, everything's brown.. it's not ugly per se, but it's always much prettier in the other seasons, unless we have a good snow. Still, I bet that access to ocean is fuckin' awesome. And those trees, I've always been jealous, haha. ;) And eh dude, I totally agree, throw a used bookshop into the mix, and it sounds like a dream to be sure - go for it if you ever get the chance man. Can't be too far-fetched, you've already accomplished the move to WA and then some! Again, glad to hear all's well.
