This is purely retrospective and biased assessment. It cannot be sell out album, because this and related kinds of sound weren't even mainstream back in 1993. Groove metal wasn't really sell out. It just replaced thrash in the same sense that thrash metal replaced classic heavy metal earlier. Actually, this album was one of those which rather kickstarted all of that. And I doubt anyone could have guessed in 1993 that nu metal would be a profitable business in 2000.

this has little in common with groove metal and nu-metal. this is more like Sepultura combining hardcore punk with Godflesh/early Pitchshifter industrial metal (albeit with live drums rather than a drum machine).

This album was actually one of the key influences for Korn, and it is a cornerstone of groove metal, along with Pantera and early Machine Head, although more distinct due to its "tribal" influence. The comparison with some industrial metal isn't surprising though, these genres somewhat independently evolved along the similar way, making focus on heavy grooves (yeah). I even know some people who consider Korn a watered-down poppy version of Godflesh, the opinion apparently reinforced by the hip-hop-influenced beats in Godflesh, but it is superficial, in case of Korn the main influence came from Faith No More and Sepultura and other related bands.

Their last great album, at least for me... With Chaos A.D. Sepultura no longer plays thrash death. They seem to have traded their suffering and their aggressiveness against the sustained panoply sustained by ethnic tribalism. The varied influences of Sepultura appeal to traditional tribal paintings supported by percussions of Latin and African origins, immersive samples, heavy production, big protest riff, with groovy and syncopated rhythm… and brings us a fabulous record! The band may have simplified its guitar game and softened its firepower, but it really will not have chosen the card of ease either. On the contrary, the disc approaches a new, much more visual dimension. They now paint a bellicose and identity-like environment in which the armed conflict rages. Chaos A.D is a huge movement that is both powerful and dreamy. The change is total and most successful. And despite a considerable drop thereafter with much less convincing albums, The brand of the great will remain eternal.

It sounds kind of silly to say this, but this album helped me get through puberty without going really, really mad. I haven't listened to it in a long time, but it hasn't lost its edge.

Brazilians understand well the message of this album, mainly on "Manifest". This track is about a massacre occured at Casa de Detenção de São Paulo (São Paulo's Detention Center or Carandiru). A riot took place there and was followed by a blooshed when police troops invaded the place to control disturbs. 111 inmates were killed and the occasion was named "The Carandiru Massacre".

In high school math class in late '93 I typed out to my friend Richard on my TI-82 graphing calculator that Sepultura had a new album called Chaos A.D. that was about to come out. Luckily I got to see them live the next summer. I formally gave up on metal in 1996, but "Refuse/Resist" will always get me pumped to the max.
