I prefer the really old ones, rather than the written ballads, but she (and they) do it beautifully and with real feeling...!

A pretty dark topic but Sandy makes it sound beautiful. What a legacy she left.

a perfect track for Sandy Denny........or does Sandy make it a perfect track? Great balance between vocals and instruments

A beautiful and haunting song, delivered by the incomparable Sandy. I believe this traditional verse refers to the campaigns in the 1880's by the British Army in Egypt and the Sudan (not Napoleonic era, as I have read elsewhere, as that pre-dates the Queen [Victoria] referred to in the song). But it is as relevant today as it was then. Very sad indeed.

So sad yet wonderfully beautiful at the same time. Sandy Denny's voice is majestic on this.

Wonderful. Admirable restraint from the instruments serves to make this all the more haunting

A haunting song from a voice that continues to haunt long after the song ends. The melancholy nature of the ballad is conveyed evocatively by Sandy Denny and knowledge of her own fate adds to the sadness she imparts in her heart felt rendition.

Leaves me in tears every time I hear it. A perfect performance of a song, sadly, as relevant today as it was then.
