Yup that was me! Yeah I agree, I don't think you're biased at all, it's hard to have intelligent conversations about music (or anything) on those forums, it's usually just the same old topics with a bunch of shitty opinions. I happened to find a cool group of users in the R&B section of KTT to talk about stuff for awhile, haven't been on KTT in few years though. I guess naturally you grow out of those things, my music taste is old school and getting more obscure, the current state of mainstream music is pretty stagnant, and the forums are a young man's game, just a bunch of teenagers who think they know everything but hardly know anything in actuality.

i was midwest mac, dunno if that name means anything lol. i've long distanced myself from it y!a had a lot of good memories for me. i actually discovered y!a because during my early piracy days, i would just always google shit like "best hip hop albums of 19__". and i always got a lot of y!a posts from google so i eventually made an account. nothing else hits the same for me tho. like you said, young man's game. plus, in the late 00s, first few years of the 10s, it was easy to keep up with releases. nowadays, theres like 50 a week and its very hard to keep up. i like *trying* to keep on top of the music game but its easier said than done. maybe i'm just old lol.

What's up man! Yeah, as you probably could have figured by now I'm not really on here like that anymore but I check this from time to time just to keep a little bit of track of what I listen to. I appreciate you reaching out man, I hope you're doing well and I'm glad you're still alive and kicking in the midst of all this shit that's happening these days. Say, you should follow me on Spotify and I'll follow you back, if you have an account. That's where I listen to most of my music these days and honestly it's a great platform for sharing playlists and what you're listening to. My username on there is jordan94 if you want to look me up. Or if you ever want to talk about some new releases or random music, you can hit me up on here, that's cool too. I'll try to check this site a bit more than I have as of late. Any thoughts on that new Kendrick Lamar album?

The apartment had these weird interior block windows between bedrooms and the particular room that I slept in could be seen from the kitchen. One of those creepy European things I guess! Probably a bit puerile even mentioning it but it wasn't particularly pleasant getting dressed when a person getting some shit from the fridge only had to tilt their head to see you... The Florence trip is motivated by art history (I but the subject as part of a double major with geography as an undergrad) but obviously we're going to do more than just visit the Uffizi Gallery!

I think at this point citizen engagement is a speciality of mine (if primarily limited to a planning and environmental context). My thesis was on public participation in an inner-city regeneration scheme... so there you go. Florence is gonna be great. Just hope we can secure some good accommodation. Was in Barcelona in March and the apartment was, well, odd...

I'm pretty much spending the summer working (on academic stuff). Not always enjoyable but some good things on the horizon. Planning a trip to Florence with some friends so looking forward to that.

He's not the first. For instance, the amount of people that have concluded Prince was a misogynist... selective hearing and conjecture is everywhere. Dude's death hit me hard - really upsetting. Still can't get my around it.

The journal article thing (the rural one) is kind of cool though. It's a really un-glamorous subject but it's fairly important and if I get the thing finished before March then it'll be going into a published academic journal which is nice.

Both are broadly about citizen engagement - one in a planning/urban regeneration context and the other in an environmental/rural context... Obviously I find it interesting but the thought of having to explain it to someone without it sounding incredibly dull just isn't a pleasant one! Do you think you've grown out of hip-hop permanently? 'Cos to be quite honest, although I still listen to a bit now and again, it does seem to hold less sway... think the genres at a crossroads now in a sense. Is there room for "grown folks-hip hop?" Haha.

Yeah I've been busy. Normally I procrastinate and shit but I couldn't really do that this year - too important... I have absolutely no clue about any hip-hop releases this year apart from the really obvious ones. I won't get a chance to seek out new music for a while either. In the middle of exam period now and fucking thesis + journal article coming up in the new year- it's a fucking nightmare really. But no, I'm good. Nice to see you're still around. All is well with you I hope? Been checking out anything new? I've literally only listened to Prince and a few staples for the last few months...

Do you know of any Nas b-sides or outtakes that are similar to Where Are They Know or the HHID title track? By the way, I'm trying to secure a college exchange to Chicago next year so I could well be stateside for the first third of 2016. If I can, I'll definitely catch a flight out to LA and hit up Amoeba! Provision of record stores in Dublin has been declining steadily sadly. Want to pick up some decent hip-hop cds while I'm in the US.

I think one of the reasons I like Street's Disciple so much is that it separates the myriad of themes and viewpoints that so often shroud or clutter Nas' albums. With some Nas albums it feels like he's got one foot in the last album and one foot in the current album - like there's a lack of decisiveness with what he wants to really do. (I mean, you get that on most albums to be fair but it's very conspicuous with Nas.) This was kind of the case with HHID, although I don't really mind because the songs that more or less pick up where Street's Disciple left off slot in with the album's general mood. The only thing HHID really needed was more songs focused on hip-hop's apparent demise. In fairness to Zilla he kind of addressed that but does so by axing half of the album. Two songs that would have worked well on Hip Hop Is Dead thematically are These Are Our Heroes and maybe a more subtle, retitled Disciple. Sonically, less so.

Thanks for that. Some good, interesting picks (especially for the SD rework) although I think the writer was still a little harsh on both of the albums, imperfect as they both are. I find it kind of funny how they were both condensed down to twelve songs. This belief hip-hop fans cling onto that classic albums should almost always have, like, 12 or 13 songs. Fuck that! Anyway, I kind of like Street's Disciple's sprawling tracklist (it's 23, not 25, tracks - You Know My Style and Thief's Theme are actually bonus cuts). Some tracks are naturally better than others and the production is a bit bland at times but apart from that, I don't think the album requires that much change. The first disc is basically Nas in "state of the nation" mode - getting shit off his chest and paying dues. The second is an evaluation of where his life is headed with a few nods to the past (a focused Life Is Good).

Yeah I'll have to get on that. Those restaurant days are over now. Looking into doing a proper internship at a planning practice over the summer... Normally when something new comes out I'm quick to bash it and don't give it time to sink in. Think I was dead on from the jump with the Prince albums though. Those records are probably the only albums to come out this year that I've given a serious listening to.

It's been a minute. How's things in Dick B's world? What have you been listening to? Anything from this year? I know I fucking haven't and now I've got to play catch-up... seriously though.

I see, seems worth a check-out. I'll be honest I got deterred by the name. Not that I don't like Ye, it's just I'm not really interested in discussion on him, you get PLENTY of that on /r/hiphopheads anyway. As for Y!a, damn I'm remembering some of those names, other people who took part in my education

Yeah man! gotta get that important e-cred so everyone online thinks I'm cool. hahah I really can't remember my thought process with that, just a dumbass thing to do lol. Oh shit I probably missed most of the cool people then haha. Not that I didn't like the place, there were a few (you being one of them) really cool and knowledgable people that I loved talking to, but there was a lot of trolls and general fuckery going on. As for KTT i'll check that place out sometimes. I've heard a good amount about it, but never actually been there. How is the average user on there?

What rap music communities (if any) are you on nowadays? I check out reddit hiphopheads on the regular but they've got a pretty narrow scope tbh. Gotta scour to find the discussion I'm interested on that site

Haha yeah maybe I wasn't as bad as I remember but still there are a few explicit things I can remember though. I was a bit of a backpacker tbh and I would sometimes (hopefully rarely but I can't remember) talk about albums I never heard and just base my opinion on what other people said. That's the main reasons why I call myself a dickhead. I like to think I've got less dickhead moments now than I did back in the day but who knows what I'll think in another three or four years though lol. Yeah looking back Yahoo def wasn't the best community but I can never bring myself to hate the place. It's the place that got me to dig deep into rap music and in turn, music in general. Real talk I learned a lot from you and the other regs who didn't suck.
