No one ever mentions what a great drummer Steven Jansen is. The Karn/Jansen partnership is what made Japan so unique.

Sounds a bit like Quiet Life, especially in the pulsing synth...but, it's also nothing like it. Breathtaking, really.

Duran Duran were inspired by these innovative geniuses. You really need to listen to their whole albums to appreciate how great they were. Checkout my blog for a write up on the Japan / Duran conenction: http://retroguyswonderland.blogspot.com/2009/07/duran-duran-turning-japanese.html

Sylvian is very gifted. There is not much he does which I don't like, and it all started from his Japan roots....

Steve Jansen (David Sylvian's brother) was the drummer in the band and was very influential in the way he blended drum machines and sequenced electronic percussion with traditional acoustic playing. Most of the tracks on the album are very good examples, and I think they stand the test of time well over 20 years later.

I like the "Oil on Canvas" version of this a lot better. It's amazing live. The drums on the studio version are way too busy.

The drumplaying seemed astonishing the first times I heard this. Then I realized that there's a hihat-figure that's played by a separate track, or drum machine. But it blends in with the drum playing and there seems to be variations during drum fills so that it sounds totally natural and very groovy.

This song reminds me of their Taking Islands in Africa - one of my favourites. I'd love to hear that one again. The same tone, but a little slower and more haunting.
