would go harder if the lyrics had less communism and more cool bog witches/crazed gnomes. still pretty sweet

Hope implies you possess something, even if just in your mind. Off to the gulag, greedy Capitalist pig.

anyone who finds himself here in awe after listening to Hostile Architecture, do yourself a favor and listen to A Forest Of Stars - Grave Mounds And Grave Mistakes from 2018. it's not a competition, each is the B side of the other

like a brother from another mother. more postpunk and modern despair but the similarity is striking in a good way.

by far and away one of the very best album of the last few years. And in the same year as Wormrot's Hiss too! God this album is something special. Traumatising and brutal, so full of rage and despair. Disturbing to the core. Closest comparison I can think of is Altars of Plagues' Teethed Glory and Injury in the very best ways.

I wrote a 2,546-word review of Hostile Architecture: https://rateyourmusic.com/music-review/Cassandra_Leo/ashenspire/hostile-architecture/176829746 The tl;dr: it’s both innovative and a masterpiece; it manages to channel its fury at injustices into its artistic style; and its message is essential. Also, the band shouted out the (slightly older) version of this I posted to Prog Archives, which I found quite flattering. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/517870667061002260/1001662264358735902/unknown.png

Wow, man! Thanks for this review. For me, as a resident of a country that has rapidly and finally fallen into fascism, Hostile Architecture is definitely the album of the year. Undoubtedly the best soundtrack to the madness going on around us. The best antidote to the ubiquitous local propaganda and the crowds of zombies worshipping the war...

Why didn't anyone tell me about A Forest of Stars' 2017 album before? :P Despite the obvious influence, great band, though. Kinda surprised they aren't more famous yet, but I guess they only have one album under their belt as of yet. I foresee great things from these guys in the future.

Yeah, what a fucking album. Completely singular vision, gripping from start to finish, different from the debut but still recognisable as the work of the same group. It’s the Teethed Glory and Injury to the debut’s The Corpse of Rebirth (and I think it might be every bit as great as TG&I). The performances are fantastic: the sax adds a lot to the album, and the drums are astounding. And those lyrics, and Alasdair Dunn’s vocal delivery – holy shit. I never knew I’d be gripped this heavily by an angry Glaswegian ranting about architecture and austerity for forty-four minutes (and in the Sprechgesang of the Twelfth Doctor doing his best Mr Doctor impression, no less), but that’s the good shit I need injected straight into my veins, and I can’t stop listening to it. I was having trouble picking an “AotY so far” between Krallice (both of them), Gospel (both of them), DsO, and Falls of Rauros, but I’m pretty sure this has broken the tie. I can’t sing this album’s praises highly enough.

Even though I also hear the Arcturus and A Forest of Stars (and some other amazing bands as well) influences, I still think Ashenspire is its own beast. Their debut album is fantastic! Really emotive vocal performances and great instrumental work. I'm really looking forward from more stuff from this band.
