I had always enjoyed Transatlantic's "All of the Above," when I discovered it in 2001. Since then, I had yet to find a band that could replicate that kind of ultra-long compositional style. Spock's Beard came close, I was never thrilled with The Tangent, and was let down by IQ. Dream Theater nailed it with "Octavarium," but that was it. Until Civilisation's "The Crossroads." Love it.

The addition of fiddles, flutes, horns all replaced the typical 3-minute Hammond organ solo that would bog down a lot of the long-form progressive rock songs I'm familiar with. While listening to Civilisation, I was anticipating that moment when the song would degenerate into prog-rock wankery but found only surprising passages of folk music. That's what won me over.

Thanks for the note. I went on a little fact-finding expedition and learned about Unitopia / UPF / Southern Empire. Turns out that the song "The Traveling Man (The Story of Eshu)" by UPF is the original "Crossroads." However, the production isn't as great, I don't like the vocalist as much, and it feels like a demo. With the lush production on "The Crossroads" I guess I've been spoiled.

Southern Empire is the new progressive rock band from the creative force behind "Unitopia", Sean Timms. http://www.southernempireband.com
