桜庭統

Motoi Sakuraba (Nacido el 5 de Agosto de 1965 en la Prefectura de Akita, Japón) es un compositor de bandas sonoras de videojuegos, anime, y series de televisión, así como un músico de rock progresivo independiente. Es uno de los compositores más célebres y famosos del género, especialmente por sus bandas sonoras para las sagas de RPGs Tales of, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile y Golden Sun, entre otros.

Durante sus estudios en la Universidad Meiji de Tokyo, él mismo, junto a Genta Kudo, fundó el grupo de rock progresivo Clashed Ice, que en 1987 dio el salto a la profesionalidad de la mano de Made in Japan Records con un nuevo nombre, Deja Vu (デジャヴ) y que en 1988 publicaría su primer y único album Baroque in the Future, para luego disolverse en 1989 durante el desarrollo de un segundo álbum. Ese mismo año, Sakuraba colaboró como teclista y compositor del tema Fragoroso en el álbum tributo Pazzo Fanfano di Musica.

En 1989 empezó a trabajar como compositor de música para videojuegos, principalmente para el Wolfteam (Equipo de desarrollo interno a Telenet Japan), primero como miembro de la Sergeant Wolf Band junto a Masaaki Uno y Yasunori Shiono y posteriormente junto a Shinji Tamura (Ver también: Motoi Sakuraba, Shinji Tamura y Motoi Sakuraba & Shinji Tamura). Durante este periodo, en 1990, lanzó su primer disco de rock progresivo en solitario bajo el sello de Made in Japan Records: Gikyokuonsou, un álbum muy personal en el que su esposa (Yuko Sakuraba) puso los nombres de los temas y cuya portada muestra una pintura de su padre, Kenjiro Sakuraba. Su hija,Mio Sakuraba también ha participado posteriormente como cantante en varios de sus temas.

Tras la marcha de Masaaki Uno a Camelot Software, Sakuraba empezó a trabajar también para esta compañía, componiendo las bandas sonoras para todos los juegos producidos para Sony, Sega y Nintendo, como Beyond the Beyond, los dos Golden Sun, la saga Shining y los juegos de gama deportiva de Mario (Mario Golf, Mario Tennis…).

En 1995, Wolfteam desarrolló Tales of Phantasia (SNES) para Namco, con banda sonora de Motoi Sakuraba y Shinji Tamura, dando inicio a una de las sagas de RPGs más longevas y destacadas a nivel mundial hasta la fecha. Desde entonces, Motoi Sakuraba ha sido el compositor principal de la música de casi toda la saga, casi siempre junto a Shinji Tamura, aunque también en solitario y más recientemente, junto a Hibiki Aoyama en el último capítulo: Tales of Vesperia (XB360).

Tras el desarrollo de Tales of Phantasia, tres de los miembros más destacados del Wolfteam (Yoshiharu Gotanda, Masaki Norimoto y Joe Asanuma) abandonaron la compañía para fundar tri-Ace, bajo capital de Enix. Esta escisión no afecto al puesto de Sakuraba, que siguió siendo el compositor principal tanto de Wolfteam (posterior Namco Tales Studio) como de la recién formada tri-Ace, que solo ha prescindido de él en uno de sus títulos (Radiata Stories).

De su etapa como compositor para tri-Ace han nacido algunos de sus trabajos más destacados, entre ellos la saga Star Ocean (incluido su último capítulo; Star Ocean The Last Hope (XB360) previsto para el próximo Febrero de 2009), la saga Valkyrie Profile (con tres capítulos hasta la fecha) y el reciente Infinite Undiscovery (XB360). De los tres conciertos que ha realizado hasta la fecha, dos de ellos (2003 y 2006) han sido con motivo de las sagas Star Ocean y Valkyrie Profile de esta compañía, junto a Toshihiko Nakamura (Batería) y Atsushi Hasegawa (Bajo) (Ver también el artista: Motoi Sakuraba, Toshihiko Nakamura, Atsushi Hasegawa.

En 1999 Hiroya Hatsushiba, el diseñador y programador de sonido de Sakuraba desde su etapa en el Wolfteam, abandonó tri-Ace para fundar tri-Crescendo, empresa para la que Sakuraba también se ha convertido en el compositor principal en sus tres trabajos hasta la fecha, los dos Baten Kaitos (GC) y Trusty Bell ~Chopin no Yume~ (Eternal Sonata) (XB360, PS3).

Entre sus trabajos televisivos, destacan sus composiciones para las adaptaciones animadas de Star Ocean The Second Story de PSX (Star Ocean EX) y la reciente adaptación de Tales of the Abyss (PS2), así como otras prestigiosas series de animación como Weißkreuz Glühen y Genso Maden Saiyuki o la película de animación CG "Blue Remains". También trabajó como compositor de los TV Dramas Vanny Knights y Weekend Drama Series para TV Asahi.

Motoi Sakuraba también ha trabajado como compositor o arreglista (tanto de sus propios temas como de otros artistas como Tomohito Nishiura o Yuzo Koshiro entre otros) en múltiples álbumes y recopilatorios. Para una lista completa de los mismos, mirar la lista adjunta a este artículo.

A principios de 2008, como un pequeño paréntesis en su trabajo como compositor para videojuegos lanzó bajo el sello de Team Entertainment su segundo disco en solitario, Forest of Glass, un álbum de piano grabado íntegramente en el estudio de su casa que incluía temas nuevos, improvisaciones y arreglos de antiguos temas.
