Basement Saints is a Swiss Rock band based in Grenchen, Solothurn. It was formed by Anton Delen and Tobias Arn in August 2012 after both left their previous bands as Rhythm guitarists due to musical indifferences. Their first few concerts were basically live Jam sessions with Anton on drums and microphone while Tobias played the guitar. They soon found a drummer, Ivan Rende, an Italian living in Grenchen. They organized their own concerts and played mostly for friends, building a small following. In the summer of 2013 they performed almost every weekend, having more concerts than rehearsals. They achieved 2nd place in a large-scale band contest and Producer Reto Burrell taught them a few tricks to ready them for the studio. Internal conflicts and pressure grew too heavy on Ivan. With heavy hearts he parted with the band.
Two months before recording the EP, Samuel Jaussi was welcomed on drums. They recorded their EP “Free Souls” live on a single day. In February 2014 they filmed their video clip for Rainbow Nation independently with Sven Probst, founder of “Cutback Films”.
Anton Delen was born and raised in Pretoria, South-Africa and migrated to Switzerland with his father, Step-mother and half-sister on Christmas (26.12) in 2006 at the age of 15. He’s never played guitar or even thought of singing, but he dreamt of becoming a professional skateboarder. While learning German a friend gave him an old guitar and amplifier, the friend migrated to Canada shortly thereafter. With few friends and a great language barrier Anton had time to make some noise with the guitar until it sounded good. By the age of 18 he was on stage playing rhythm-guitar with a band called Haïrdrÿer and had an apprenticeship at Pilatus Aircraft as a Design Engineer. He parted with Haïrdrÿer in 2012 under mutual agreement then immediately formed Basement Saints with Tobias Arn.
Tobias Arn grew up in Bettlach SO, Switzerland. He leads an adventurous life, competing with his twin brother in all kinds of sports and activities. Snowboarding, surfing, and skateboarding. He just had a natural talent for everything, especially playing guitar. His dad bought him a guitar and Tobias proudly showed his dad the “smells like teen spirit” riff a few weeks later. His dad shrugged and said he should come back when can play real music. He too found himself playing rhythm-guitar in a band called Lash Raw.
Samuel Jaussi was born and raised on a stool behind a drum-kit in the Basement. Bands came and went, but the two Saints somehow stuck. So he was taken into the brotherhood, thus came Basement Saints.
It was in the middle of nowhere at a venue called Bad Bonn in Düdingen Switzerland where Tobias and Anton met. The band playing that night was a Duo called Black Box Revelation, Tobias saw Anton checking out the bands gear in front of the stage when he said to his friend: “I wanna be in a band with that dude one day.”. Anton saw Tobias later across the bar while ordering a beer and thought to himself that he must be some Swedish rock star or something, he needs to talk to him. Anton was hanging out with the band after the show when this long haired, tattooed dude that looked like a Led Zeppelin roadie named Christoph Bänniger came up to him and told him about his friend’s intentions. Anton and Tobias immediately recognized how much they had in common and exchanged numbers. The last thing Anton remembers was seeing Toby and Christoph on top of their Volvo, sitting on fold-out chairs with beer and Wolfmother screaming out of the open doors below them. A week later the phone-call came from Tobias and they got together for a jam. Anton went to Solothurn almost every weekend since. As a Jam-Duo, with no songs, Anton thought they were ready for the stage and organized a small open-air festival in his hometown. The show went all right, Toby jamming his licks and Anton switching between drums and microphone. They got a hundred Swiss Francs for the concert, which Toby received gladly, waltzed over to Anton with a smile and said “hey our first payload! Fifty-fifty right?” As Anton nodded, Toby ripped the 100 Franc banknote in half and handed Anton the other piece.
