it'd be awesome if the mainstream percentage was calculated based on the amount of listeners from spotify instead of last.fm, it would be way more accurate, because under this method there are some inconsistencies as identifying some artists as underground when they're clearly not. Great concept tho
Hi, assuming this is about the data export tool, the CSV download is in UTF-8 encoding so all characters (including Polish) should display OK. Maybe you can tell the program you are using to read it, to treat the file as UTF-8 encoded?
For anyone who doesn't know the Unix timestamp is the digits at the end of the file name. If you know the time you'd like to scribble since then you can use this site: https://www.unixtimestamp.com
to convert the time to a Unix timestamp. This only allows you to specify a starting time, not an ending time. So if it's been a while since the time you specify you'll still have to download everything up to the present, but if you're like me and just wanted your history from a few hours ago then it's easy enough to find out and minimize the download time.
Haha sorry yeah, unfortunately, it still is here on last.fm, only looking at total number of listeners, the tool checks for that still. But even Kanye or Drake or Taylor Swift are not that widely listened to here apparently. And you're right, it is a poor touch stone, but it's the only hard one available. Also, not many new last.fm users with more modern tastes join in any more i think.
Yeah, the mainstream link worked to 25%. Seem to remember a previous similar site that was able to download my scrobbles, about 5 years ago. There were difficulties but it worked after some tries. Should I just continue trying until it works?
I just discovered the mainstream meter, and while I do like it (especially the graph), do you think you could provide an alternate to the linear calculation? eg 100% = 10.0, 50% = 9.0, 25% = 8.0, etc. I think that would really spread the data out more and further highlight how obscure some of my taste are. Thanks!
Happy 12th scrobbling anniversary today! ... How fast time flew by playing your >7800 bands ... May you be blessed with many such musical anniversaries, and even more fascinating music experiences in the years to come. Have a great Sunday :-)
The export utility you wrote is amazing! Thank you so much.
I'm starting to learn how to access API's and extract all that data myself. Free Last fm won't show me my historical data, but I'm guessing that data is included in the export from your tool. Is that correct?
That's right. At least not on last.fm :) you could switch to listenbrainz instead, or rely on your streaming provider like Spotify or Pandora to keep track of your stats, not sure if they provide that service.
Since the last.fm userbase represents mainly users with very refinded taste (yes, we are the Elite, guys, be proud of yourselves) it would make a lot of sense to use Spotify's Monthly Listeners Data to define 'Mainstream'.
Foo Fighters (74%) is more mainstream than Taylor Swift (42%) on your tool, because the last.fm userbase says so (2.3M listeners for Taylor Swift, while Foo Fighters have 4.1M).
If you compare those two artists' popularity on Spotify you'll see a drastic difference, Foo Fighters have around 10M monthly listeners, while Taylor Swift has over 35M.
Just food for thought, do you agree? Really like https://mainstream.ghan.nl/.
Which profile are you trying to export? Did you use the new export tool? Because you should, it is more reliable (has a retry-mechanism when last-fm responds with an error) https://lastfm.ghan.nl/export/
Hi, i see the problem with the new one too, Chrome seems to have a problem with the number of page-requests getting queued for your profile (ERR_INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES). But in Firefox the new one works fine for your profile, can you confirm that?
I'm really sorry the tool is now failing for many people. The app hasn't changed, but somehow the reliability of last.fm has deteriorated since the beginning of this year. I am working on a work-around/rewrite but it is not there yet.
Hi ghan64...many thanks for your efforts in the export tool! I have used it many times, it works great when setting a unix timestamp to get my scrobbles. But when I try to retrieve *all* my data(no timestamp used) it stops in 98-99% both with the old and the new version of the tool.
