NWOBHM was pivotal for the consolidation of the heavy metal genre into the thing of its own, finally separating it from the hard rock scene, and contributed to its dissemination all over the world. But this movement wasn't that revolutionary musically: it was mostly a direct continuation of earlier works of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, UFO, Rainbow, Judas Priest, etc. Frankly speaking, a significant part of NWOBHM can be bescribed as Deep Purple 2.0 more or less, if you put aside the bluesier songs from the early 70s Deep Purple's catalog. I think they were even more important than Black Sabbath, who were directly imitated only by very few back then. That being said, many NWOBHM bands even didn't really renounce their bluesier hard rock affilations, and there were many who played mostly (or only) hard rock, prog or AOR. Most famous bands are not like that, of course, but the deeper you get into the scene, the more rockish or 70s on average it sounds.

Also, it seems that people often think this movement was short-lived and ended around 1982-1983, which is completely untrue. While Leppard and Maiden hit mainstream, a lot of of new bands were coming under the radar. These bands were very diverse as well, but on average they became significantly heavier, more Priest-influenced and with less pronounced hard rock elements. Such was a general trend of classic heavy metal scene around the world, and NWOBHM of 1984-1986 era reflected this in bands like Tysondog, Preyer, Samurai, Avenger, Tyga Myra and so on, while other bands like Millenium, Chariot or Dark Heart focused more on the melody and slightly softer side of the things. 1986 was still a big year for NWOBHM, but in 1987 the number of albums released has dropped sharply. Again, this was true not only for NWOBHM, classic metal became less prominent in general then, for example, in USA and Germany too. So glam metal and thrash metal finally took over.

JFC, why do so many people use names that are used by NWOBHM bands??? Just look at the top NWOBHM bands. Shiva, Limelight, Sapphire, Holland, Titan, etc. On the bright side, this does indicate that British metallers know how to give their bands names that are pretty freaking awesome. Let's just hope that there won't be any cloud rapper that goes by Iron Maiden anytime soon.

Yes, they're super obscure due to only having one EP and then mysteriously disbanded.

Recently dug into a nice 3CD compilation of rare NWOFBHM music: "Winds Of Time: The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal 1979-1985" from HNE Recordings. It gives a great overview of the bands that really started the thing and soon drifting into obscurity but omits all the big names which are known until today.

Judas Priest formed too early and never participated in it. [2] The same for Motörhead. They weren't a part of the NWOBHM because they were earlyer on the screen as a influence for the NWOBHM.

Priest & Motorhead both pre date NWOBHM. They should be more aligned with the dawn of Heavy Metal, not a 'new wave'.

truth_in_chains Ever heared that NWOBH started in 1979, and Priest started in 1970, so you're completly wrong. Stop tagging Priest and Motörhead with this tag!

How about Dio? Can Holy Diver be part of the NWOBHM? I mean he used to play with Ritchie Blackmore and HE'S British, and Tony Iommi and those Sabbath dudes are all British as fuck too. isn't that close enough? Not sure about Vivian Campbell but with a name like Vivian you gotta figure he's got some Brit in him too.
