Just a description of metal about battles, no matter the actual subgenre. Folks... it's just labels to help people categorize stuff. Don't take them too seriously.

"Battle Metal" just like Viking Metal refers to thematic elements of the music..."Melodic Death Metal" and the 'real' genres refer to the stylistic genre. So I don't see what the debate is about, all music has thematic and stylistic characteristics! [2]

One discussion below makes me think of certain groups or tags as [group]Only wimpy kids list their genres[/group] or [tag]not to be taken too seriously[/tag] ;)

all tags doesn't need to be genres.. tags are used to describe music and this tag is good for that [2]

V Except Viking Metal is actually a mixture of Folk and Black Metal, not a thematic element like many people think.

folk is a Sub-genre just like any other band and turisus actually picked up the microphone stand like a sword on stage and said they are the only battle metal band period. every other band can be whatever they want. but manowar is NOT battle metal they are Crap metal...so in that case i cant reason with that logic XD

Urgh. This isn't a genre..."viking metal" was bad enough, but "battle metal" is just a stupid tag. It's folk metal.... [2]

btw Tyr is NOT folk metal and never will be, Heri Joensen does not want fruity folk instruments in his music. Basically it's progressive heavy metal about vikings, so Tyr calls it TRUE viking metal! Just like Turisas calls their music Battle Metal !!!

Like Viking metal this is a real genre. Battle metal is bombastic polka party metal for trolls, about battles and booze. A lot like power metal which is more fantasy metal actually. Little children love these genres.

I actually put Tyr in both viking and folk metal. They sing about vikings and have folk elements in their music. Viking metal is a genre and so isn't folk metal.

viking metal, pirate metal (like swashbuckle), battle metal, beer metal (like tankard) and party metal (like municipal waste) are not genres - just ways of grouping themed artists.

new sub-genres are created all the time, in metal especially. call it a pseudo-genre if you must, but genre it is, even if only two or three acts associate with it at this time. also, there is a (subtle, to be sure) difference between viking metal and battle metal. it's all in the lyrical content.
