I like them and they have potential but I wish they'd venture outside the whole background music style for a change of pace like with Black Chamber or Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble. It's also got the same problem as Kamasi Washington in that the sax solos all start to sound the same. It's just a bit too muzak-sounding. The production is also really compressed and low on dynamic range

Everyone's entitled to their opinions and if they're just not your thing that's fine. I think you may have been mishearing this band, though. First, their softer moments are far from the corrupted smooth jazz of muzak, rather inspired by psychedelic rock and spiritual jazz. There's a lot of depth and feeling to reward the careful listener. Second, the suggestion that their pallatte is limited to this softer sound. I understand that if you only hear a band on record you may not get an accurate picture of their energy. I can only suggest that you see these guys live if given the chance. They really live up to the song 'Space Carnival' - a high energy cosmic party vibe. I guess when you've seen them live it becomes easier to understand their energy on record too. Granted, Channel the Spirits is more energetic than their more recent output.

Just curious, which spiritual jazz musicians do you hear influenced in these guys? I don't hear much Sanders or Alice Coltrane or any of those classic 70s people, again I hear way more electronica/psychedelia than anything else, not just in the production but in the very arrangements themselves

I'm hearing a little Alice Coltrane, especially on tracks like Timewave Zero and Summon the Fire. It definitly reminds me of her World Galaxy stuff, especially Galaxy in Turiya. Their new album seems a lot like a different route Flying Lotus could have taken with something like cosmogramma, which is definitely inspired by Alice, but rather than the strings flylo uses, we get the amazing sax

Although it's still young, this is absolutely one of the best things I've discovered this year of pushing myself to discover music. Can't wait to go a bit deeper into their discog.

"Summon the Fire" and "Super Zodiac" would make excellent video game boss fight music.
