Probably because they never had mainstream appeal and were never signed to a major label. Not to mention that their attempts to go commercial with "Innocence Is No Excuse" and "Rock the Nations" backfired spectacularly. Sometimes, success also requires a good amount of luck and the right timing—releasing the right music at the right moment.

I’ve heard from a friend who lives in the UK that they’re quite popular over there. Not as much as Maiden or Priest of course, but were quite popular. That’s something I’ll one day look into. How come Wheels of Steel or Denim and Leather never made a splash in America. We’d love Biker Metal over here, what was the excuse not to promote them. I guess the glam metal scene could’ve overshadowed them.

Metal is generally more popular in Europe. Saxon got kinda boring though, they never made it out of the 80s so to speak. Early to mid Saxon is great but unlike some other nwobhm bands they never went anywhere after. Some people seem to like their 2000s stuff but i havent heard those records.

I remember some interview with Lemmy where he basically said that at one point, like in the early 1980s, Saxon was the biggest heavy metal band in the UK. Then Maiden got Bruce and Priest made SFV while Saxon started to slowly go more commercial.

Saxon are probably the only band I can think of that has been around for 4 decades and has put out their best material in the last 25 or so years (no disrespect to the early 80s material). Fucking love these guys, it's such a shame they aren't as known as some of their contemporaries like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest.

Well, in reality it would be beyond nuts if they would have anywhere near million listeners here. For example Judas Priest and Rush barely have over a million listeners and Saxon has never been near their league in terms of popularity. And I'm not knocking Saxon, I really like them but there's also a reason they never made it as big as Maiden, Priest and some of the other bands from the same era.

Just for a little more context the most played songs on Spotify for a few bands: Iron Maiden (The Trooper, 215 million), Judas Priest (Breaking the Law, 142 million), Motörhead (Ace of Spaces, 256 million), Accept (Balls to the Wall, 42 million), Dio (Holy Diver, 132 million), and finally Saxon (Princess of the Night, 25 million). No, Saxon aren't even close to the biggest bands of that genre. Just for shits n giggles: Metallica (Nothing Else Matter, 702 million), Led Zeppelin (Stairway to Heaven, 584 million), AC/DC (Back in Black, 833 million), Queen (Bohemian Rhypsody, 1,5 billion), Justin Bieber (Love Yourself, 1,6 billion), Cannibal Corpse (Hammer Smashed Face, 16 million).

I would totally agree with you on this if Iron Maiden had replaced Paul Di'Anno, with say, Joe Schmo, an average singer. But no, they snatched the best one of the whole dern bunch from Samson - where they also got their original drummer, by the way. I think Tygers of Pan Tang and Raven also were up there with Saxon at one point, but they both succumbed to the pressures of making commercialized music. Unlike Saxon though, they never rebounded.

Не знаю чего там переоцененного в них. Крутая группа, которая играет заводной хэви без напыщенной батимитол мелодики , чем пестрят многие группы. Saxon же играет утяжеленный хард-рок по-сути , еще и блюзовые моменты добавляя (в поздних альбомах), чем и выделяются. В нулевых вообще второе дыхание получили: отличные альбомы с плотным звуком и качевыми запоминающимися песнями.
