I mean, I understand that back in the day it seemed like a blatant (and ultimately futile) attempt to jump on the grunge/early altrock hypetrain, but in retrospect you gotta give them props for trying to go for a different sound, especially when your primary fanbase mostly consists of fragile metalheads, who usually shit on any kind of change in their favorite sound. Still, they made their move a couple of years too late, when the grunge/post-grunge scene was already pretty saturated with their own big acts. Then again, they might've not been interested in that sound back then or could've thought that if they did that on, say, "Adrenalize", with grunge still on the rise and its future uncertain, they could've messed up big time, losing their metal fans and not really gaining any grunge fans, with the genre's popularity quickly fizzling out.

Besides, their sound was not just grunge, but a mix of grunge with hard n' heavy, which was pretty unique at the time, but probably a bit too experimental for the grunge fans' liking back in the genre's heyday, so it might not just've been metal fans pressuring them back into hard n' heavy territory, it might've also been that the grunge fans couldn't really get into them, and because of that paid little attention to their efforts. But hey, at least we got a cool album out of this experiment.

Totally agree - in my opinion it's better than everything they released since. They really tried to do something different with Slang and, for me, it really worked. I was really disappointed with Euphoria in particular which seemed like a blatant attempt to simply win back fans who liked the Pyromania/Hysteria style.

Arguably my favourite album of all time. I would fight hard to prove that this is one of the best albums ever made. That no one gave a chance cos Def Leppard was seen as corporate pretty-boys.

I love these guys through and through. My favourite hard rock band, if you can call their style hard - they are great at what they do and no one can do better. But this album is well underated. I think they were tryin to find their feet with Vivian coming into the fold - this was an experiment to say the least, and yes you can hear shades of U2 in it's style. I love all their material and this collection of songs ain't perfect, but controversially I will state this is my favourite album. This is like to them what 'Hot Space' is to Queen. They dared to push the envelope on this one, and I am so glad they did.

They don't even sound like the Def Leppard I grew up with by this point in their career.

Yes it's shafted. It's the Slang single. BTW just dropped by to say this album is very under-rated.
