Description
The 1st edition of the MazaJ Festival presents a selection of contemporary sonic practices arising from the Middle East and resonant diasporas, recalibrating current understandings of Middle Eastern sonic cultures and stripping bare the stereotypes of ‘Arabic’ or ‘Middle Eastern’ music. As well as introducing international artists to UK audiences, the festival will also offer a rare occasion for artists from Lebanon, Egypt and beyond to meet and collaborate.
The festival features work from the very best contemporary composers, live musicians, leading electronic producers and sound installation artists from the Middle East and its resonant diasporas. These artists are linked by their sonic experimentation within and without a tradition of Middle Eastern musical practice in which improvisation has always played a key role.
