PLAISTOW: JAZZ:
Johann Bourquenez, piano
Vincent Ruiz, doublebass
Cyril Bondi, drums
The classical trio line-up – piano, bass, drums – is revisited from top to bottom, free from any stylistic constraint. The band’s music, entirely acoustic since double-bassist Vincent Ruiz joined early 2012, is constantly evolving. One could find varied influences such as Steve Reich, Philip Glass, The Necks, Squarepusher, Plastikman, and even Mad Professor. Formed in 2007 in Geneva, Plaistow – the band’s name was inspired by a composition of Squarepusher – has since given more than a hundred concerts worldwide and in 2015 have released their stunning 8th (!) album Titan. Titan was received with tremendous critical acclaim, for their Escher-esque compositions, referring to the moons of Saturn.
“If the Mercury Prize-nominated GoGo Penguin are the One Direction of contemporary piano trios, Plaistow are the Radiohead: intense, demanding, sometimes thrilling, sometimes stubborn” – In The Blue Moment.
