Based on Icarus at the Edge of Time, the stunning book for children written by the world-renowned physicist Brian Greene, this is a futuristic reimagining of the classic Greek myth with cutting-edge visuals, brand new score by Philip Glass, film by Al and Al, live narration and an orchestral performance by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
In this tale, a boy ventures through deep space and challenges the awesome power of a black hole. While his anguished father watches from the safety of the mothership, Icarus succumbs to the unyielding forces of Einstein's general relativity: what seems to Icarus like a short joy ride corresponds to thousands of years for everything far from the black hole. When he returns, Icarus bravely enters a new world - the future - but suffers the devastating loss of his friends and family to time's relentless passage.
The first half of the concert features John Adams' Doctor Atomic Symphony, an orchestral distillation of Adams' powerful opera about the life of Dr J Robert Oppenheimer, the emotionally and intellectually complex physicist who developed the atomic bomb which was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Commissioned by Southbank Centre, the Royal Society, World Science Festival (New York), Associazione Festival della Scienza, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Glasgow's Concert Halls. Co-presented by Southbank Centre and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Arts Council England through the Sustain fund.
