new kimbie album... pretty terrible. first impressions? mine: low on electronics, high on standard guitar+drum music. terrible tumblr-cool collabs with that annoying teenage king krule guy. kimbie's vocals used to add an amazing dynamic to the usual post-dubstep fare... but on the new album the vocals are either plainly bad, or a distraction from the good stuff (the instrumentals, on occasion). i remember seeing some of this new material at the SXSW live boiler room show, and just assuming/hoping it was down to a poor sound-guy, or a bad performance... turns out most of the album tracks sound exactly the same as that first airing :(

yeah, agree with the BR. it's lost its essential focus. way too little quality control now, too. some of the recent events - especially in special locations- have been pretty haggard. one in miami last week was particularly dire. i only really tune in every now and then if it's a name i'm interested in, or someone i want to cop some tracks/gems from, aha. cool that soton has a decent scene going now... that's pretty sweet, man! living london-ways, you definitely get spoilt. i'm right on bristol's doorstep now, too, which is a place you definitely need to check out if you haven't already. & yep yep... hardware. have been fussing around on ableton for these last few months, it's so damn arcane though, and inherently unfun/unintuitive to use. definitely need some outboard stuff!

hah! it's not so much the distraction as the funding leak that gets me with it... records are deceptively cheap as single treats, depressingly expensive when considered in bulk! i'm lusting after some production gear now, as well... it never stops. you should definitely commit to a cheap pair of decks, though... they're something you can always sell on if you don't give them time/love! get some second-hand technics or some mid-range CDJ's or something. the CDJ/controller route is definitely easier to learn on. vinyl is a harsh mistress. but i digress... do you go out clubbing anymore? still go to the BR? i've kinda dropped out of it these last few months. bit burnt out/bit stale imo.

nah, i quit my boring office job a few weeks ago. didn't last very long. think i'm gonna go abroad for a bit, delaying the PhD applications myself. i suppose PhD's in sciences are a lot easier to come by, funding-wise, so it's a nice option for you. i'm envious! for me it would be a huge treat. one thing's for certain though: avoid real work. flee. did you ever get into dj'ing in the end? or producing? any more steps into that world?

i've always liked him, but he really found his style with Take Care. plus a lot of the productions are by T Minus who is one of my favorite hiphop producers

thris just wasn't very cool about some work my friend was involved with. he contributed a lot to the br and they cut him out pretty rudely. it's a bit of a cool-kid cabal at the moment, hype definitely going to their heads! turning into vice magazine, tbh, a bit too cool for school. i haven't been in a while, but mostly cause the line-ups lately have been shit.
