“Look What You Made Me Do” is the lead single from Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated follow-up to 2014’s 1989. It takes shots at several unnamed rivals, but most fans suspect the barbs are aimed at Kanye West, Kim Kardashian West, and Katy Perry. The song contains themes of rebirth and ditching a weaker self for a stronger, reinvented self, as well as a completely new musical sound incorporating electronic pop and samples from unexpected sources (see song credits below).
In the week leading up to the single’s release, Swift cleared all her social media presence. She promoted the single with the release of three separate videos, posted a day apart on her social media, depicting a snake’s tail, body, and head, which most consider a direct reference to her meme-like reputation as a ‘snake’. She then announced the album title and artwork, reputation, and the release date for “Look What You Made Me Do.”
