Maegi is the power-progressive metal project of Oganalp Canatan, singer of Dreamtone and Dreamtone & Iris Mavraki's Neverland.
Maegi came up as a solo project idea while D&IM's Neverland was supporting the Ophidia album in Europe back in 2010. After working on seven releases with Dreamtone and Neverland, Oganalp felt that it was time to create something different.
"I always adored what we did with Dreamtone and Neverland. There were flaws, but they were sincere albums. However, I always wanted to create something in similar spirit to the oldschool power-prog metal. Our albums with the bands were moving towards a different feeling and I always wanted to have this raw perspective. I miss the last decade's power metal albums and always wanted to go towards that direction. Call me old fashioned, but I like it."
After the Ophidia tour, Neverland and Dreamtone went into hybernation, which gave Oganalp the needed time to work on Maegi. A few months of planning and songwriting quickly turned into a full conceptual album.
"With Neverland, we worked with many great artists, featuring them as guests on our albums. I always liked that idea, and wanted to have the same attitude with Maegi. Some may believe that it came as a promotional idea, but the truth is far from that. I wanted to work with people that I adore and with luck, they liked what they've heard, giving me their performances for Maegi's debut. I see myself as a composer first, and it means more than all the world's pleasures when you see people you adore performing your songs."
When asked, Oganalp is quite firm on continuing Maegi as long as he can.
"Maegi is not a - one shot- project. I am not doing this for money. To be sincere, music was never an income source for me, but an expense. Maegi gives me the opportunity to express my ideas and have fun with people that I adore to work with. Therefore, as long as I can afford it and as long as I feel creative, there will be a new Maegi album. Actually, I already have the second one on the scratchboard, awaiting its turn!"
Oganalp Canatan was born on August 18th, 1982 in Ankara, Turkey. Having a troubled childhood due to his mother's terminal illness, he found himself within the world of music at very early ages as a way to let it all out. After a few tryouts with some bands as a drummer, he found the band Dreamtone, together with his bandmate, Onur Ozkoc. While Onur and Oganalp were in search of a suitable singer, fate led Oganalp to become a singer himself, in order to be able to complete a studio session, later on leading him towards the path of becoming a professional vocalist.
Oganalp has a degree on Accounting Information Systems but he never liked the profession and after his mother's death, music started to take more and more of his life. Focusing on Dreamtone and the later project, Neverland, Oganalp and the bands released seven albums and singles, working with great names like Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Jon Oliva (Savatage), Tom Englund (Evergrey), Edu Falaschi (Angra), Mike Baker (Shadow Gallery), Gary Wehrkamp (Shadow Gallery), Urban breed (Tad Morose) and more.
Near to his metal music career, Oganalp is also composing music for indie-game developers and working as a graphical designer for companies.
