I love the new singers and records (the latest one not so much), but if you listen to the old ones, ... it's just so much better. Those were real masterpieces. The sound, the soundscape, everything. The new ones are far from the evocative nature of the older records. Look, I don't wanna say they're selling out, but the music has certainly become much more streamlined with time.
My favorites are Century Child and Once, but I always enjoyed the "Fans of Old Nightwish" lastfm group's description: "Once = mallcore + orchestra. The use of orchestra was just to show off in front of naive kids, who think this way: 'Wow they use a symphonic orchestra, they must be so great!' Completely unnecessary." "Compositions are totally flat and empty (to be honest, Ghost Love Score is a little exception). Tuomas did better with just piano and keyboards." "The whole band was instructed by Tuomas to play artificially simple music, to attract masses and gain 100x more fans than Nightwish could have if Tuomas stayed with good music." "Emppu can't show his guitar skills, because he has to play just simple rhythm and stupid solos. No real, metal riffs on this album. Jukka plays drums like... Well no comment needed. Just compare drums from Wishmaster to drums from Once."
Oceanborn, Wishmaster and partly Century Child are the best symphonic power metal albums in existence. Sorry, but later stuff (starting with Once) is one of the worst and poppy "metal" I have ever heard.
Lol, it doesn't work like this. They are power metal with symphonic elements. They have some folk or other elements, but there's no subjectivity here, they are objectively symphonic power metal and you can't deny it.
Wow, Last.fm users brought "Dark Passion Play" (first Nightwish album without Tarja) to the top! A real surprise for me, I was pretty sure oldfags and adepts of "good old times" have already delivered the incredible amount of scrobbles of 90s and beginning of 00s albums and in no way any of the recent works could ever get ahead. Well, this clearly explains why the band decided to part with Tarja, they needed some fresh air, and Tarja seems to holding their breath in the creative terms. Btw, I've never liked Nightwish :) And I liked Tarja mostly in Beto Vazquez Infinity, plus a few Nightwish well-known songs maybe.
The zero-thought response would be "of course the pop style sellout album was popular," ignoring how pop Wish I Had An Angel was. I'm not sure I can remember a time when DPP wasn't the top album. All time listener counts on Last.fm aren't a good gauge of anything, because the number of listeners on Lastfm peaked around 2007-2010. General consensus among Nightwish fans (inasmuch as such a thing even exists) is that aside from The Poet and the Pendulum, Imaginaerum is much better than DPP, and I expect it would also be one of the top albums if the sitewite number of listeners hadn't dropped. Further, that listener count depends on single exposure; note that while DPP and Once each have 460k+ listeners, several tracks on both albums have only around 160k listeners. Lastfm used to be an internet radio streaming service, and singles from both albums got additional scrobbles that way. I don't recall Imaginaerum ever being available on Lastfm radio. Tarja was fired for personal reasons.
Viajou irmao kkk
Here is your answer: "I wanted to remaster all tracks from original mixes and after all that was fine for both the band and the record label. There were some issues trying to find and use exactly the same mix versions because in some albums we found "tons of tapes and hard discs with hundreds of different mixes". So the most hardcore fans can try to find differences between the tracks in Decade and the original albums."
I used to hate the idea of listening to their new song. because i just couldn't imagen Nightwish without Tarja. Now I'm getting older and maybe a bit wiser, I'm opening up to the new music. For me music needs to stick in my brain, and it's hard for me to open up to new music when I'm so in love with the old.
I know what you mean. I used to refuse listening the two albums with anette but when I listened I loved it. When Floor came it just got back to be a wonderful band as when it were with Tarja. I think both are great vocalists.
I discovered this band while Anette was the vocalist and thought she was amazing, later found Tarja and thought she was also amazing. And I also think Floor is a really good vocalist, but their recent music just never lived up to their older music imo. But that's probably me just growing up and changing my tastes.
Could be, but a lot of fans felt the music on EFMB was lackluster by Nightwish standards, especially compared to Imaginaerum. Have you heard After Forever's self-titled album (beyond the single)? I'd recommend that to gauge how much Floor's voice appeals to you when she's at her best.
Well it took two albums for Tuomas to be able to write music that showcased Anette's skills... so hopefully the same will apply to Floor. I also heard in an interview that Floor has more input (say) on how the vocals will sound on this next album. So I'm holding my fingers crossed it will showcase more of her versatility (and especially operatic voice).
Nothing against the other two, but I grew up with Tarja and Nightwish for me is with Tarja. Altough the other two have some good songs. I just hope one day they will be able to become one again as nightwish
No. Tarja won't because she has her solo career (which very little people care for) and as a result Nightwish don't need her, but Tarja certainly needs Nightwish. With Floor the band is able to be very dynamic. They are able to pull off the operatic Tarja stuff (unfortunately Tarja's voice isn't what it was; and she is struggling with her solo renditions of Ever Dream and Over the Hills and Far Away recently) and Floor is equally adapt and capable at the Anette-era songs (which I doubt Tarja would do justice) while also interjecting her own style at times.
Just ordered my ticket for Oberhausen in November, can't wait to see this band live. I've been to a lot of different concerts, but from videos alone I'm pretty sure this one will be in my top 3, easily. Can't wait :]
Saw them with live week ago. Floor is absolutely stunning. Performance was made incredibly well both as a singer and as the frontlady (moves, dances, etc.). And, people who dislike her, believe me, she CAN sing. She can sing the more difficult and higher parts of Tarja very, very well, unlike the poor Anette.
After seeing them live I immediately checked out After Forever and Revamp, which my bad - i never did before. Her singing in both bands is beyond beautiful, especially in After Forever.
I really do hope that as @MergeAndAcquire below me mentioned, she will be unleashed with her full power in the next album. (Endless Forms Most Beautiful is astonishing though).
Agree with what you said about the next Nightwish album Tuomas should write songs more fitting for Floor's voice and capabilities. Check out her new band (duo) Northward. They released their debut album recently and it's pure heavy metal with Floor singing in a similar style to that of Lzzy Hale from Halestorm. I hope we can expact more of that type of vocal on the next Nightwish album with her operatic abilities.
True that Anette could NOT reach so high vocals but at least she was kinda cute and she had a good energetic live on-stage presence. A suitable singer is not only about the most academic operatic voice but also about a suitable appearance and image as the front of the band. It's not the highest pitch voice who wins. There are many factors included. And Like MergeAndAcquire said, it's pointless to argue. It's all about personal taste.
People still fighting the meme war of whose period is the best, while I'm just chilling over here waiting for Tuomas to wake up from his celtic dream and unleash the Dutch Beast with the next album. Make it raw, Tuomas, per favore.
That Floor's vocals in After Forever still get me hyped after all these years is testament to her ability. Tuomas, for the love of all that is good and holy, please allow her to be the badass soprano we know she can be on the next album.
Agree with both @lucky-clovers and @MergeAndAcquire 😂 Tuomas needs to write songs more adapt to Floor's voice to show off her vocal abilities. Her vocals are so much better in After Forever and ReVamp (even Northward) and I heard in a recent interview with Tuomas that Floor has more input on the vocals of the next album... so hopefully. We'll have to wait until 2020 though 😭
