Riff Kitten has always been an avid creator. As a young kid from Minneapolis, Minnesota, it all started at the age of 10, when he programmed simple video games and created original MIDI soundtracks for them (his favorite part). His interest in music grew and grew, and as a teenager, he started picking out the harmonies and melodies of his favorite rock songs on the piano. The world of music theory became a fascination, and at 18 he enrolled in a Classical Theory and Composition program at the University of Music Duluth. It was during his tenure there that he won a regional orchestral composition competition and received several collegiate awards. He reveled in opportunities to write in all of his favorite styles, including rock, jazz, soul, classical, and film music, but eventually settled on electronic music, a genre rife with chances to be creative and fuse together different music elements.
His music today sounds like a rich blend of his favorite artists, including Parov Stelar (a master of modern swing), Griz (a master of modern funk), Bonobo (a master of modern downtempo), and Ulrich Schnauss (a master of modern chill). Riff Kitten enjoys mixing soulful live instruments with electronic elements and seeing what happens. As someone interested in Zen meditation and spirituality, he likes to compose quickly, treating each composition as an 'in-the-moment' reflection of a transient mood or feeling. For anyone who is curious, he does indeed love kittens/cats and has his own lap-cat named Zeus, who telepathically dispenses musical ideas and tips as he naps.
