Seminal a cappella harmonizing by the longest-running gospel act in the business, gorgeous in and of itself, but also an important stylistic link to the secular soul music that was about to be born. The earliest cuts here, done when the Hummingbirds were a trio, are a little back-woodsy (i. e., sort of primitive) and combined with the less-than-stellar sound might be tough sledding for contemporary audiences. However, the later stuff, cut after the flamboyant Paul Owens joined the group, is much more cosmopolitan and compelling, particularly the propulsive "Movin' Up," a stunning "Amazing Grace," and the impassioned "My Record Will Be There," which features bass master Willie Bobo to particularly good effect.
