• WANTED: KC/Lawrence (& more) Music

    Jan 8 2013, 1h39 por thisisahiijack

    1. This is an ever-growing list of bands and albums I am searching for. Much like the 'haves' journal, not all of these artists are current residents of the area, but all of them have called the region home at one time or another.
    2. This list will never be completely up-to-date, as there are so many musicians that have come out of the area and have released albums with multiple bands. I've also chalked it up to a near-impossibility that I will ever get all of these, but I can try.
    3. I'm open for almost all types of music. If you have something you may not see here, don't let that keep you from speaking up about it. The only types of music I make a general rule not to track down are those who lean more towards a sound of rap rock/nu-metal (downthesun, 8 degrees, Canvas), bar band/classic rock/hair metal/general guitar wankery (Puddle of Mudd fits into the bar band category, the others I don't care to list examples for), or bad rap (Tech N9ne, countless others).

    1. This is a journal containing bands and albums I have recordings from on my computer. Though I try to support local music as best as I can by attending shows and buying albums, not all of this music I am in direct physical possession of through purchase.
    2. Not all of the bands below are directly from the KC/Lawrence area. Other cities and towns I keep in this collection are Topeka, KS, Columbia, MO, Wichita, KS, Warrensburg, MO, Manhattan, KS, and a few other, more rural areas of the region. Essentially, it contains everything east of and including Wichita in Kansas, and everything west of and including Columbia in Missouri.
    3. In addition to the previous point, you will notice that not all of the bands here are current residents of the region. Many bands (Mates of State, White Rabbits, etc.) unfortunately decided to move away to a larger metro area. Others (The Appleseed Cast, Namelessnumberheadman), were started in different regions and then relocated here at some point, usually early in their career. …

The idea is for a journal for every month listing new albums I listen to and what I think so that when I review the year's music in December, I will have a handy reminder. I will add to this as the month goes on. Suggestions welcome.

Released months ago in the States, I had to wait for the UK release before I could hear it. Incredible buzz around this album. Couldn't wait to hear it. And when I did, my first reaction was that of disappointment. Stayed with it and after a few songs, really got into it. Look forward to getting to know it better. My favourite - Pleasure Sighs - for its Cocteau Twins dreaminess and shimmering guitars.

  • a few Harvey Girls doin's

    Abr 27 2006, 5h35 por melissamay

In case you were wondering, The Harvey Girls are working hard on a bunch of new songs/"albums" (do people use that term anymore?) in between playing and cancelling shows. Here's a couple of new mp3s to check out:

    Walking the Cow
This is a Daniel Johnston cover. Yes, we're working on a covers album. Yes, it will be songs from the 80s. Yes, it will be worth downloading.

    Slow Tiger
This is a rough sketch of a song for the new album (tentatively titled Nutate) that we'll complete one of these days (we promise it will be before the new year). And, to be honest, this version probably won't appear on the album. So save it and send it to us in a few years and we'll put it on our box set. The song's kind of atypical of the rest of the album, but we really like it.

Then, you should listen to The Notes and Scratches, Victor Scott, Feedle, and Euros Childs "Chops" because you'll be at the computer anyway.

    Thanks

  • the harvey girls vs. feedle & a new song

    Mar 19 2006, 19h36 por victorscott

I was delighted when Simon from Spoilt Victorian Child released my first record Happy Days (and my second one too the B-Sides) on his record label SVC Records. Turns out one of the happiest byproducts of having a record out is hooking up with so many cool people around the world.

Take for example The Harvey Girls. They released their brilliant album The Wild Farewell last year on SVC and they also happen to be sweet, awesome people. When I decided to try my hand at a remix, they sprang instantly to mind and happily they agreed.

I started working on it and things were going alright. Around this time Feedle released his record Leave Now for Adventure on SVC and I was listening to it, and listening to some of his older tracks and digging the hell out of them.

Then a funny thing happened, feedle infected my Harvey Girls remix. In fact quite a lot of feedle infected it (Wooden Hill to be specific), so much so that it turned into feedle vs. the harvey girls.

From a Google search, it looks like I'm the only member of Last.FM who has

    The Harvey Girls
    Billy Harvey
    and
    PJ Harvey

in his top artists list. I am pondering the meaning of this.
