Tèwèldè Rèdda is from Eritrea, a country just north of Ethiopia and may well have been one of the first people in Africa to start playing an electric guitar back in the 60s. He was one of the more important figures in the modernisation of Ethiopian/Eritrean music in the 60s and 70s. In fact he is still modernising it today, spending some of his time building electric versions of the traditional Ethiopian/Eritrean Krar. Thanks to the amazing 'Ethiopiques' compilations the rest of the world can hear that musical modernisation happening.
