Originally known as BLOOD WAVE, this Parisian Heavy Metal outfit adopted the name SORTILEGE ("Sorcery") in October 1981 and duly found a ready audience in thier homeland as they toured as support to SAMSON and DEF LEPPARD in 1983. The group debuted in Britain with the track 'Cyclope De L'etang' on the Ebony Records compilation album 'Metal Warriors', but signed to German label Steamhammer for a string of albums after releasing their first ever, self-titled affair on the Dutch Rave On label. SORTILEGE's recording roster for this inaugural effort comprised singer Christian 'Zouille' Augustin, guitarists Didier 'Dem" Demajean and Stéphane 'L'anguille' Dumont, bass player Daniel Lapp and drummer Bob 'Snake' Dumont.
The opening album for Steamhammer would be 1984's 'Métamorphose', released domestically via Devil's Recordings. 1986's album was issued in both English language, 'Hero's Tears', and French, 'Larmes De Héros'.
Drummer Bob Snake guested for another French act DEMON EYES on their 'Rites Of Chaos' album, whilst vocalist Christian Augustin later fronted FURIOSO, the band propject assembled by ex-TRUST guitarist Thibaut Abrial and SATAN JOKERS drummer Renaud Hantson. The 'Furioso' album also featured SORTILEGE guitarist Stephane Dumont.
Axe Killer Records re-issued the debut album in 1997, adding an extra six tracks.
