• 12 months on Last.fm, top 12 albums I've bought since

Sunday the 16th marked my one year anniversary here at Last.fm (ignore the 'Registered' date to the left, see 'Scrobbling since' instead). Here's a journal to mark the occasion.

Before I get to the albums, just a little bit about what Last.fm has done for me in that time. I can honestly say Last.fm is the site I'm most addicted to, more than any other. You hear of people saying they're addicted to Facebook; I could never use FB again at the drop of a hat (though I do like it) but Last.fm is so much more.

I've discovered some of my now favourite bands, either entirely through or with the help of Last.fm and the people I'm met here. Machinae Supremacy, Iced Earth, Evile, Sanctity and Dream Theater to name a few, but there are countless more on my ever growing "list of albums to get". Last.fm also took my music geekery to new heights, given the way I monitor my charts. In fact, here's a look at my chart toppers in my 52 weeks of being here:

  • Christ Illusion

I just picked up Christ Illusion the other day at Walmart. Of course in classic Walmart fashion it was $20 because they don't mass oder it like the latest Jessica Simpson album. Regardless I figured how can you go wrong with Slayer? Well I guess I was half right in that remark. See, ever since Dave Lombardo left them in the early 90s Slayer has been churning out crap, but al least it was different. Now that Dave is back it seems like the old Slayer has returned as well. Every track on this album is heavy, and fast just like the 80s era Slayer we all love. Perhaps this is the greatest fault of the album. To me every track seems like songs that didn't make the cut for Reign in Blood. The first track, Flesh Storm is sounds like a classic Slayer song, and that was good but after 3 songs the formula gets boring to me. There are no real surprises, except for some interesting leads done by the guitarists Jeff Hanneman, and Kerry King. …
  • New Slayer

I bought the new Slayer album a few days ago. I've listened it few times, and still can't say anything about it as a whole album. It's propably taking a little time before it will open...
But after listening it few times, I have some opinions about the songs (and the opinions will very likely change when I get more time to become familiar with the album):
Flesh Storm: Okey, this one was nicely fast and chaotic, just the way I like my Slayer songs to be. Basic song. The lyrics of the third verse was nice. Media and religion critisism are always my favorite subjects.
Catalyst: I don't have anything to say about this one yet. Well, there was at least one riff I liked...
Skeleton Christ: I don't know about this one yet... Well, I don't hate it. If feels good to hear Araya hailing satan ;)
    Eyes Of The Insane:
I don't hate this one either, but it's not my favorite. Maybe it haven't opened yet.
Jihad: The intro is good. Sounds nicely "modern". …
