"Out Loud" draws from the themes of loneliness and heartbreak that weave through Hanna's poetry, and was originally written as a one-off promotion for her book. Though Hanna enlisted the help of a producer friend, Bruce Wiegner, to begin work on the single in July, the project was for the most part spontaneous: "We winged it, completely, 100 percent."
