Ma is the tenth album by Devendra Banhart, released on September 13, 2019 via Nonesuch Records, the same label of his last two records.
The album, once again produced by Banhart longtime collaborator Noah Georgeson, features backing vocals from Cate Le Bon and a duet with Vashti Bunyan, who has previously collaborated with Devendra.
Ma began when Banhart and Georgeson were invited to record in an old temple in Kyoto, Japan, after an Asian tour. The album was then recorded in California at 64 Sound and Sea Horse Studios in Los Angeles and Anderson Canyon in Big Sur.
According to an article on American Songwriter, the subtly autobiographical album presents intertwining themes of motherhood, global politics, life and death through several different tonal lenses, ranging from lighthearted to melancholic and somber. With songs in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese, the album is more tender, emotional and personal than his previous work. Three of the album’s tracks are sung in Spanish, a decision Banhart took because he “has been profoundly affected by the poverty and despair he’s witnessed in his home country Venezuela,” where some of his relatives still live.
In support of Ma, Banhart embarked on a 26-date world tour. For the tour, Banhart has partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 from each ticket sold in the United States will go to World Central Kitchen (WCK), an organization that fights hunger around the world. At the time of the album, WCK was responding to the crisis on the Colombia-Venezuelan border and served more than 350,000 meals to date.
