Certainly one of my favourite compilations. Especially the full expanded edition that was issued in the late 90's. Collecting all four songs from the Ideal For Living EP is a much welcome addition. Personally, the only song I could do without on the entire comp is Atmosphere, and other people tend to love that track.

It's a tough call. I'm certainly inclined toward that view myself; a similar case could be made for Catherine Wheel's "Like Cats & Dogs." But I ultimately keep those in separate buckets. An "album" is an organically unified work, at least in its finalized, released version, planned out as such. An "anthology" is a compilation of separately written and recorded works, that can function similar to an album, but should be judged by somewhat different criteria, because there's more of an accidental quality to it. So here, I'd say "Substance" functions as well as Unknown Pleasures or Closer, were it an album, but since it's not an album, it's instead an outstanding anthology.

Hey, glad to see someone's still on Last.FM. I haven't lost any passion for JD's music, in fact it grows with every year. Personally I REALLY love the stuff they did as Warsaw which at least Peter Hook seems to be embarrassed about but I just love bands in that embryonic stage before they 'nail' their sound. 41 years now since Ian passed and JD's music is timeless.

anyone who thinks substance is better then their studio albums hasn't given Unknown Pleasures or Closer enough listens. yes this is a good compilation of unreleased songs but there's no continuity, its almost like a greatest hits album, there are some hella catchy songs on here but it doesn't come close to the emotion that Unknown Pleasures or Closer has..
