burning darkly out of new york city, nihiti is officially the new dark side.

unified by a total commitment to the recurring motifs of downwardly spiraling psychedelia, the music of nihiti veers from gentle acoustic homilies to screaming fields of sonic death with all the possible gradients of sound in between. not much is known about the actual members of nihiti, though rumours abound - vague stories of drug addictions, bizarre ritualistic ceremonies, and the infamous "nihiti worship extra action" have traveled across New York and Berlin, but it's still to be determined whether that is based on the downer/death and heartbreak obsessed lyrical content or any actual facts (listening to the music, one might be tempted to say there's no way this sound could even exist without at least some of that being true). but one thing is clear: the music of nihiti exists as living proof that the end of the world has not been exhausted as a subject of musical exploration. of the little that's actually been confirmed, we know that nihiti is currently based in NYC, that some members of the band are japanese, and that nihiti has done extensive work scoring films and theater productions in New York's ever-burgeoning performance scene and has made appearances at several large berlin art exhibitions… and that's about it. well, that and the fact that their first record, "other people's memories", is a whirlwind tour through places you've almost touched but never been, from pop hooks and stomping drums to crashing waves of destruction, from gentle cello/piano duets to screaming synthesizers and epic auditory assaults. maybe the best word for the whole mess is "filmic" - a nihiti song comes on, like the grand rush of "the return of kind ropes", and less than 2 minutes later you've seen something, something at the edge of beauty and deformity, something you might need to see again and again, especially given that nihiti songs never linger - they come, assault your experience, and dissolve back into the aether. They are from New York, formed in 2009.
