Listen to some delta blues or some such thing and you will find that their voices sound like they drank too much, stayed up too late, are running from the man and sleeping out in the cold, cold rain. If they sang with some golden voice it would suck badly and we would send them back to their fancy million dollar mansions and luxury recording studios to make music for wussies.
mitch26, of course you are allowed your opinion on music, but to suggest that Rod Stewart would do a better version of this song shows me that your musical soul is dying. Rod Stewart is a modern day wanker who has made money covering songs for the same people that buy Michael Bolton (no talent assclown) music.
He'll never get anywhere. You should look at his discography. He has gotten farther than most, and with his artistic integrity intact. He never had to write a song like Do Ya Think I'm Sexy or John Hammond wonderful song...hmmm I don't know any songs by him.
some may think (like mitch26) that Tom Waits will never get any where... but that is pretty silly, he's a legend and he's exactly where he wants to be. He hasn't sold out, and he's stayed true to who he is. That has helped him have such a creative, long and respected career. I can understand that his voice isn't for everyone, and many people do cover him. But I love the words and raw emotions to all that he does.
Have loved Tom since this album came out, worked my way both backwards and forwards from this one. I love his tearjerky drunken piano ballad stuff best of all (Ruby's Arms, On The Nickle etc) but he is a one-off genius
