Yes, he was. I think he has lost some of his abilities (or rather passion for metal music, me thinks) in the last years. From Revolution Renaissance on, he hasn't done anything that good, at least in my opinion. He rips his classic songs too much in them sometimes, and otherwise it's mediocre mid tempo or very plastic and bland power metal. Still liked the album Stratovarius though, not to speak of everything prior to it. Wow. Nice speech. What I came here for is to say that too bad I haven't listened to Classical Themes & Variations more. I think I've listened it through, like, twice. Don't even know where my copy is at the moment! ._. It has some seriously good music in it, so maybe I should find it. :D
Everything he's ever done & has been doing is unbelievably awesome. His lyrics, his composings, his guitar skills, his voice... I'm a huge Stratovarius fan, I just can't deny the existence of Jens Johansson and his contribution to the band, but I believe that Tolkki was the true spirit of Stratovarius.

Gone downhill since Elements, Pt. 1, the culmination of his style, towards which his music has gone starting all the way from Fright Night. In my opinion. And he's stated the same somewhere. After that, only a few good albums and a handfull of great songs, sadly. Still looking forward to Project Strato. Just listened to his Classical Themes & Variations song Soldiers Prayer which was way better than I recalled. o.O
Timo Trollki >_>
gotta say that even though I was neutral during this charade, after his newest stunt with band name and announcements(today), I am now officially on "kill Trollki" side...
He just could not leave it at the somewhat peaceful state it was >_>
"The album was originally to be released by Frontiers Records, but the label
rejected the final master presented to them by Timo Tolkki. After discussions
between lawyers, Tolkki bought back the rights to the album and it was sold only
through his official website." haha I missed that. If your label rejects your music is a pretty good indication that it's at least not as good as your previous work. Which is a bit of an understatement in this case.
No way in hell it was his attempt to make money. It's him showing he's mentally recovered from his breakdown thing, and so he made good music for good people lol. The only decent song is Freya's Teachings and even that isn't anything special. There aren't even any plays of it cause no one got that far, lol.
