We first came to the idea of reworking a Sandy Denny song after including part of her “The North Star Grassman and the Ravens” on a mixtape. We had stumbled upon the LP that Denny had recorded with folk band Strawbs in 1967, and one song reminded us of Jim O’Rourke’s cover of “Women of the World” by Ivor Cutler.
Something about the wistfulness of “Sail Away to the Sea” probably drew us in. It’s a simple, rolling tune that moves on a flowing structure with interwoven harmonies, something that we’ve tried to capture, with a sprinkling of beats, percussion and Omnichord.
I’m sure at some point you’ve wanted to Sail Away to the Sea?
