Sister group to The Primes, who featured Temptations-to-be Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks, began as a quartet but would slim to a trio: founder Florence Ballard, her friend Mary Wilson, and het schoolfriend Diane (later Diana) Ross as the Supremes. First rejected by Berry Gordy, the 4 cut this beaty "Shoo-be-doo-wop" R&B-pop, whose melody has strong hints of The Drifters' There Goes My Baby.
