Biography

The Ozcats Salute the Bobcats Enthused by revisiting Bob Crosby Bobcats’ recordings of the 1930’s and 40’s a select group of Sydney musicians joined forces to replicate the distinctive and exhilarating Bobcat sound. As individuals each musician is outstanding in his ability to recreate the original style yet put his own influence on the music. They are Bob Barnard - trumpet, Trevor Rippingale – tenor saxophone, Paul Furniss -clarinet, Dan Barnett - trombone, Dave MacRae - piano, Stan Valacos - bass, Lawrie Thompson - drums, John Blenkhorn - rhythm guitar. Ron Falson – arranger and 2nd trumpet. The group made their debut with high distinction at the Mittagong Jazz Festival 2006 and a few months later was honoured to perform at the historic100th Anniversary of the Professional Musicians Club. Other triumphant performances have been for the Manly Jazz Festival, Central Leagues Jazz Club and the Sydney Jazz Club. The Ozcats musicians relish recreating the tight intricate ensembles and exuberant swinging solos as played by the original Bobcats music masters who together made jazz history. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Sydney trumpeter Ron Falson has come up with arrangements and, most importantly, a group of players capable of generating the ebullience that was a hallmark of Bob Crosby’s 1936-42 smaller band, the Bob Cats. The all-star aggregation includes cornetist Bob Barnard, clarinettist Paul Furniss and trombonist Dan Barnett, and livelier tunes are interspersed with pieces such as Pete Kelly’s Blues, which Trevor Rippingale’s tenor sax just melts across
