Born out of the need to write songs with honesty, a penchant for playing instruments they can’t pronounce and a little bit of dry humour, The Owls are not what they seem are the antidote to the crushing boredom of Brit School kids with shiny guitars making tuneless dirge which is pumped into the sub conscious of the young and hip.

Mixing junk shop melodies, gin-soaked harmonies, scratchy guitars and lush Autoharp swells The Owls are not what they seem have inadvertently slapped the face of the traditional indie pop line up.

They use flutes where others would crank their Telecasters to 10, dabble in Xaphoon solos where a lesser band would filter sweep their Micro Korgs and use cheap broken percussion where drummers would reluctantly allow “that 808 cowbell sound”.

With members having been involved in varying scenes over the years, The Owls are not what they seem are a resolutely anti-scene band. You won't find them scurrying the streets of Hoxton and Shoreditch, their feet are wary of those well trodden roads. Instead they prefer the undiscovered parts of London, free from a need to belong.
