Distinctively Different! In a world where "the same as" is considered dope. The dopeness of The Boy Illinois is that, he isn't like others. Chicago born, Illi says, "I refuse to change for the sake of being mainstream Rap", Illi says. "Hip Hop ain't one dimensional". You can't put Illi in a box, you can't define him in a word. Illi"s audience is, well read, thoughtful, and primarily likes R&B. His music is "Rhythm and Rap", like him, different.
Politically Savvy, and unapologetic for it, "Illi" tweets about social consciousness and informs folks. You may not agree with him, but he does not consider being popular for it. He does it because it's in his heart, and people need to know. Inhale part IV "Horai" touches on his feelings about the government. He likes Frank Ocean, not The Weekend. Illi says, " I wake up to Sade, I run my mile to get me going, I don't believe in monogamy, I don't di..ride". "I'm that southside ni…, fu.. the government".
The journey of his third mixtape “Inhale 3”, takes you from the begining with “Illi’s” Haitian family origin, his struggles with experiencing youth, his political views, fashion preferences, breakups, recording etc. If you’re hungry for lyrics, “Illi’s” got a feast waiting. “You gon eat it up, cause he gon heat it up”
Every once in a while, in those great gusts of Chicago winds, you’ll come across something worth keeping. And that’s precisely what happened when The Boy Illinois crept onto the scene. Attending the University of Illinois he found his niche to grab the ears of listeners with a slick delivery and sharp wordplay.
Leaving college to pursue music full-time, Illi first made noise in 2008, releasing his first solo project Inhale Part 1: State Representative, and also released a music video for his single, One Love. A year later in August 2009, he released his second mixtape, the critically acclaimed Inhale Part 2: Loyalty Before the Love on which he showed amazing lyrical growth and overall progression as an artist. The project received media praise from the likes of The Smoking Section and WGCI 107.5 FM and definitively put Illi on the radar as an artist to watch.
