The album was released on october 29, 2017 being a concept album based on Freud's theories about eros and thanatos.
The album concept explained by the band itself:

"With its fall, corrupted by the primordial evil, the edenic man has acquired free will, becoming both player and object of play in the hazardous eros-thanatos game.
The Eros can mean love, passion, but also nostalgia, sorrow, depression and hatred. Eros can be the reason of living, can vitiate the heart and the mind, but he also can give cathartic power to the spirit.
Conversely, the Thanatos is a return of the heart, burned by the passion, to the primary silence, to the inertia of transcendence. The Thanatos is the one who traps us all in the spiral of death and reminds us of our empty existence, of our transience.
All of the weakness in the world: greed, envy, hatred, lust and so forth, are derived from free will and from inability of men to overcome their condition and limitations continuing to act on lies in spite of learning some truths in his life."
Pain Eternal is actually this perpetual drama of mankind, revealed in a poetic way to make it easier to endure. This album describes an oneiric world where love can become poetry, death can become glorious and vices can become virtues."

The album was self released and produced by the band itself at the band's own studio Imperium Tenebrarum Studio.
