The seventh track from Tears for Fears' third album The Seeds of Love (1989); it was written by Roland Orzabal and Nicky Holland. Orzabal noted an influence from Tom Petty's "American GIrl" on the song's rhythm. It was initially planned to be the first song on the album, featuring what co-producer Dave Bascombe described as "this huge epic pompous intro", but "Woman in Chains" wound up taking its place and the intro was cut. It was also considered for a single release, and a Canadian single with a significantly different mix went as far as a promotional release. Ultimately, the album version was mixed together from two different takes and featured some 100 tracks on its multitrack master; when prolific producer Steven Wilson remixed the album for a 2020 reissue, he noted that it was "quite simply the most complicated mix I've ever undertaken!"
